Which is the barking mad bit?

Umm:

A Black History Month website controlled by a white man featured taxpayer-funded adverts alongside claims that white people are the “genetically defective descendants of albino mutants”, a Telegraph investigation has found.

Not exactly the way I would put it but as far as we know black is the default colour – perhaps the original – and white skin evolved several times. Evolution is the survival of those with different genes, or genetic expressions perhaps. White skin isn’t albino tho’. But the rest, genetically defective descendants of mutants, is actually true even if not quite the way to put it.

But that’s not the barking mad bit:

However, it is owned by a private business, controlled by Ian Thomas, an advertising executive, who set it up long after the annual celebration was established.

On Friday, Linda Bellos, who was instrumental in launching the Black History Month celebration in the UK in the late Eighties, compared the website’s white ownership to “enslavement”.

“The whole purpose of Black History Month is to empower us [black people] … I don’t want some white man, or even white woman, playing that role,” she said. “The taking of ideas, and indeed the taking of people, was done very successfully by the British, it is called enslavement. I am not talking about his motives, but I am talking about the outcome.”

Celebrating this nation’s lovely diversity with a website is enslavement now….

  1. I suppose it depends how far back the evolutionary tree you travel.

Proto-human primates presumably still had hairy bodies at an early enough stage, like other primates today. What need they of melanin for sun protection, since the hair would thus serve.

I understood the melanin-creation evolved to protect the skin as the hairy bodies became less hairy, and hence more open to the UV.

Anyone know if the skin colour (under the hair) of todays great apes is white, brown or black?

  2. “Campaigners distance themselves from ‘loopy’ material on site run by white publisher”- Says the DT, whilst publishing some loopy material about running a history site being akin to slavery.

  3. I don’t want some white man, or even white woman, playing that role

That “even” is rather revealing: behold the instersectionality in the hierarchy of victimhood!

  4. “I don’t want some white man, or even white woman, playing that role”

So, tell Channel 4 to take all them adverts and promotionals off the TV then.

  5. Yes TimC, chimp skin under the fur is white. No need to protect from the sun’s ultryviolet waves in sultry climes. As our ancestors became hairless, we needed to get black skin. As humans moved North the diet became deficient in vitamin D so white skin re-evolved to produce the vitamin D in those precious hours of sunlight when it’s not raining.

Screw this bitch, I’m never buying Bisto again.

  7. Perhaps Mr Thomas should claim to be transblack – a white person self identifying as a black person. How could the brothers and sisters, and the other sexes, argue that?

  8. On the whole the British didn’t enslave anyone. They bought them already enslaved from their fellow Africans, or from Arabs.
If you look back to the Dark Ages then the British themselves tended to be enslaved by Irish colonists and slave-raiders, and presumably by Anglo-Saxons.

Which is why so many British cleared off to Armorica which thereby become named Brittany in their honour.

Maybe our poor “enslaved” Africans would like to clear off too. I suggest the Mexico/US border as a fruitful destination.

  9. “But the rest, genetically defective descendants of mutants, is actually true”

Sorry, but it isn’t… Descendants of mutants is true. ( and a given..)
Adding “defective” makes the statement dead wrong because it implies there is a “correct” genetic sequence that must be preserved at all costs. Which isn’t the case in what’s called the “habitus” or external appearance, of which bits are very variable since it allows “rapid” adaptation to most of the ravages of changing environments.

“Defective” mutations do exist (and albino-ism is one of such) , but they always lead to severe disability or inability to function properly in the natural habitat, effectively reducing the chance of getting offspring to zero, if not being lethal in their own right.

As for the colour of apes’ skin: it’s a greyish black because even our nearest cousins have a different setup for their epidermal melanofores, plus they use a different mix of melanins. They never needed our adaptations, as they’r still effectively jungle-dwellers.
It’s ours that is actually highly evolved and adapted to having no body hair to speak of, and cope with the problems that gives, especially on open plains.
The caucasian variety is the most highly evolved, because we can adapt from anything to pasty white to arab brown. Not quite octopus-level, but still sufficient.
Neither is it the only, or best, solution, given that the asians developed a different approach. And they can do any old climate as well as us, if not better in terms of tackling the sunny hot stuff we don’t really like.

Linda Bellow takes an essentialist view of race, while many of her allies hold that race is a social construct.

Likewise, when it suits them, feminists hold to an essentialist view of women, unless it’s to their advantage to claim that the difference in abilities, aptitudes and performance between men and women are socially constructed.

  11. I don’t want some white man, or even white woman, playing that role,”

Well then, get out there and do it yourself. He’s notable because *he* is the one that did it instead.

  12. Still waiting for the identification of the white men who ran about the jungles of Africa and scooped up the natives into slavery. Most accounts suggest the white so-called “slavers” secured said individuals already enslaved from Africans who had done the scooping up and initial selling the same as livestock.

  13. I can imagine how offensive people like Bello find the involvement of a white man in ‘Black History Month’. It’s like finding out that the publisher of the Daily Stormer was black.

  14. @Grikath says ““Defective” mutations do exist (and albino-ism is one of such) , but they always lead to severe disability or inability to function properly in the natural habitat,”

It could be argued that being black is a defective mutation for those living in northern climes where the amount of sunlight received is too low for the what the body normally expect.

  15. The very phrase genetically defective descendant of … mutant illustrates a level of biological ignorance which makes it pointless to read further. Every organism alive today is a descendant of a mutant; otherwise it would be a precise copy of the primordial replicator. To suppose that any copy of the primordial replicator still exists today is to posit the infinitesimal probability that the very first chemical assembly to replicate was optimally adapted to a continuously existing environment niche.

To classify a genome as defective is similarly obtuse: all genomes are sub-optimal because they are the product of dynamic selection processes trading off a vast array of criteria. Supposing that there exists an optimal genome is like looking for an optimal tax rate on the straw-man picture of the Laffer Curve.
