Like the suffragettes, protesters are castigated for taking direct action. But how else will we wake up to the climate emergency?
Well, given that we’ve 30,000 people in Glasgow right now, from near every nation on the Earth, insisting that they are there to solve the crisis I think we’re probably woken up, aren’t we?
The technical name for it is “The Madness of Crowds.”
So the demonstration against Trump being defrauded of his second presidency was justified because otherwise people wouldn’t have woken up to the emergency?
Oh, it’s only if you agree with what they’re protesting about!!
Perveyors of wolf traps crying “Wolf!”
Lets not forget that the suffragettes were technically terrorists. They made several assignation attempts, deployed roughly 100 bombs murdering a few people in the process and blinded one with acid.
The suffragettes were also shrieking lunatics and giving them what they wanted has proved to be a greater disaster than even the most curmudgeonly conservative predicted at the time.
No need for the “technically”.
Other countries have women the vote without such efforts.
If anything the UK suffragettes delayed women getting the vote.
Their right to peaceful protest ends when it interferes with other people right to go about their lawful business. End of.
Lock them up for a year or two to discourage the others.
Don’t like the current situation? Lobby your local councillor / MP. Stand for election, although the fact that voters have the opportunity to vote for ‘green’ candidates and 97% of voters don’t tells you what the electorate really wants.
And as with every pledge made at FLOP26, including the plastic packaging tax, no one is telling the plebs it will be they who will be paying for it.
Jones thinks that blocking roads and inconveniencing ordinary people is justified because it generates maximum publicity. They should try burning down a mosque and drawing cartoons of Mohammed if that’s what they want. Front page of every paper guaranteed. Surely justified if all humanity is at risk.
@AndyF “They made several assignation attempts”
What???? Did one of them stalk Lloyd-George offering him a hot date?
Personally I propose to fight climate change by following the example set by the great and good, especially at Glasgow- within my modest means of course.
I will fly whenever possible, and failing that drive. No public transport or cycling or walking, and certainly no video conferences- face to face meetings only and definitely no masks except perhaps when there is a camera trained on me.
I will eat the finest meats I can afford.
That is definitely the way!
As for those obstructing the highway, I would aid them by glueing them to the road or chaining them to railings- preferably in winter. To protect them from global warming I would have them hosed down regularly.
As for the suffragettes, they did a good job of sustaining the view that women are hysterical and not to be taken seriously. It was the mass of women who “kept the home fires burning” from 1914 to 1918 that earned the vote.
“I will eat the finest meats other people can afford.”
FTFY.
How else will we wake up to the protester emergency? Run a few over to draw attention to the crisis?
Suffragettes….
As we all ‘know’, Emily Davison threw herself in front of a horse in 1913*, gallantly committing suicide for the suffragette’s cause. Although
“Found in Davison’s effects were…, the return stub of her railway ticket to London, …, a ticket to a suffragette dance later that day and a diary with appointments for the following week”
Which rather suggests she planned to be alive after the race and just got things wrong.
*if only Owen Jones was prepared to throw himself in front of a galloping horse, or preferably a whole herd, to further his causes. Can’t help thinking he doesn’t really believe in them.
@Pat: “It was the mass of women who ‘kept the home fires burning’ from 1914 to 1918 that earned the vote.” More that the men who had fought could no longer be denied the vote, and women over 21 (initially) got it as a counterweight, because women were thought to be innately conservative.
women over 21 (initially) got it as a counterweight, because women were thought to be innately conservative.
They are. It’s just that “conservative” means “easily swayed into supporting foolish nonsense because their authority figures told them to”. See: BloJo making a big fat fool of himself in Glasgow, and His Royal Tamponness Prince Charles.
A fatwa on conservatives. They’ve conserved fuck all. Being neither hot nor cold, we should spew them out.
I agree with Greta’s protest song; Owen Jones can stick his climate crisis up his arse.
“Stand for election, although the fact that voters have the opportunity to vote for ‘green’ candidates and 97% of voters don’t tells you what the electorate really wants.”
Yet the main parties are giving us what the 3% want whether we want it or not.
Off topic but I’d in interested in getting our American contributors views on the Virginia Governor’s election.
From CNN I understand it was all a plot by Trump, the Russians and evil space monkeys. And probably Joe Rogan
“Protesters”. What are they protesting against? They’re no more “protesters” than the agrarian and peasants’ parties in the old Soviet bloc were the opposition.
The climate?….but but but what will this mean for house prices
David/Dave,
Obviously if half the country ends up flooded and under water, then house prices will rise in the dry remaining half.
House prices? Barack Obama, Joe Brandon and Al Gore all own beachfront property. When they sell up that might be the time to stop thinking it’s a scam.
I still don’t understand why this whole Glasgow thing couldn’t have been done online. Isn’t that what most of us have been doing for the last eighteen months? I’m all for face to face when it’s sorting out how you’re going to get something done on a site, but for chats and speeches, sheesh, things have moved on from Bretton Woods.
I suppose caviar doesn’t taste as good at home.
The ‘world leaders’ all fucked off after their speeches, so I can’t see any value they added either.
I am impressed though by India’s response to China, ‘we’ll raise your 2060 pledge and raise you to 2070, your call’.
That was the point at which COP26 was basically over.
@Ltw
I expect the Indian government is more worried about their people dying tomorrow of poverty than what might happen to the weather in 80 years’ time.
Diarrhoea and pneumonia kill an estimated 250,000 children every year in India. So that’s going to be around 700 tomorrow.
@PJF,
He’d love that – if the Climate Crisis was long, thick and hard.
@Ltw – doing it online. While some aspects of meetings don’t work very well online (making personal connections, getting people drunk), I can only guess that most of it was for show. It seems that facilities were available – see https://unfccc.int/cop26/press-conferences#eq-4 and a press release at https://newsroom.cisco.com/press-release-content?type=webcontent&articleId=2203906 and, of course, the Queen only participated over video.
Greta Thunberg is right about climate change. We need to tackle this terrible emergency.
Greta Thunberg is a hero for the age.
Women should have the vote.
Women are real human beings also.
SoG
Are you actually Mr Ecks’ Evil Twin?
BlokeInTejas I am a good person. Calling someone evil, when they are good is offensive.
BlokeInTejas Are you Satan’s Groomer of the stool?
@ Supporter of Greta
BLAH BLAH BLAH
Andrew C – agreed. I was quite serious about being happy that India basically gave the whole ridiculous gravy train the finger.
PJF Blah Blah Blah back to you.
Anti-nuclear anti-CO2 tax campaigner who tells us to listen to the science and can’t name one scientist who has won a Nobel, is mentally handicapped by her family’s own admission, can’t explain the atmospheric greenhouse effect due to missing some of the free education available to her, and can’t briefly explain the greening of the world or why grasses absorb more CO2 than trees or why fracking reduces CO2 emissions compared to the current alternative of coal contingency.
That Greta.
Thank goodness she’s an adult, ‘cos I wouldn’t tell a child she’s a barnardo.
Greta is not mentally handicapped. She has autism. Elon Musk has autism and he is a far far more successful and intelligent than you. You cannot dismiss someone totally just because they have autism. The fact you do that shows you are a reactionary ignorant fool. Grow up. You are uneducated and ignorant.
SoG
Out of sheer curiosity, do women think men are real human beings? Indeed do they think that the morons have enough brains to be fit to vote?
I must admit I don’t dare ask Rhoda or Julia this one!!
SoG
Autism is a mental handicap.
Several backward tribes in history have revered “special” people. Clubfooted Oedipus, Jo Biden…
But it never turns out well.
Greta the Doom Goblin’s creepy parents have allowed her to starve herself into permanent adolescence, like some abused gymnast, and now she is paraded around the world having angry hysterics. I pity her.
Her climate hysteria started because she fretted as a child about dying polar bears. Fretting based on outright lies from the climate lobby that polar bears are dying out, when the opposite is the case. So the fear and anger which stunted her physically and emotionally was for nothing. Sad.
“Greta Thunberg is right about climate change. We need to tackle this terrible emergency.”
Could you perhaps provide some credible evidence to support this statement? She has stated that entire ecosystems are dying. Could you actually identify even one of these dying ecosystems, tell us where it is, what is happening and provide evidence that CO2 is the cause?
Oh look, another of Violet Elizabeth Newmania’s sockpuppets rears it’s ugly little spastic head.
@Supporter of Greta
By any chance are you of the Titania McGrath crowd? If so I want you to know you got a chuckle from me
Oh look, another of Violet Elizabeth Newmania’s sockpuppets rears it’s ugly little spastic head.
And even that can’t bring itself to support Owen Jones.
philip. There are different types of autism. And Thunberg is not mentally handicapped. She is intelligent. You are ignorant and need to research this subject without blinkers.
Would you say Elon Musk is mentally handicapped? Musk is a far mores successful person than you.
Do you have a multi billion dollar fortune?
MC You are acting in a creepy logic for patronising a school girl.
Henry Crun You are just an offensive horrible person. You are a troll. You use terms like ugly and spastic to describe people. You reserve no respect. Stay out of politics. Leave it to the decent intelligent people. You are utterly disgusting scum.
Lurker Nope. By the way Andrew Doyle supported Corbyn to be PM.
philip. You cannot dismiss all autistic people as irrational, simply for having autism. When Elon Musk one of the most successful business people of modern times has autism. That is discrimination to dismiss someone just because they are neuro diverse. Autism can be a disability. But sometimes autism is not a disability. It depends on the person.
Some argue that Adam Smith had autism.
Some argue that Einstein had autism.
It depends person to person.
Henry Crun If you put your money where your mouth is, then Donald Trump would be wiping his ahole with 10 dollar notes. LOL.
Greta is not mentally handicapped. She has autism.
It’s still a mental handicap. For Elon Musk, possibly a beneficial one, when it comes to technical stuff at least, not so much when it comes to being a CEO or chairman or whatever his position is these days. But it’s a handicap.
I’m an engineer with a lot of crossover into networking/software so I spend a lot of time doing translation between management and the more Aspy (yeah, I know you’re not meant to use that term anymore) members of the team. I’m on the more functional end of the spectrum myself, so I can talk to both, understand what the Aspholes are saying, and get across to them what our management want (without them dismissing me as clueless because I have enough technical cred). I’ve worked with a guy who simply wouldn’t talk on the phone, to anyone – but if you emailed him, day or night, with a technical question he would get back to you within minutes. He consented to talk to me on the phone once, only because I had shown I knew what I was talking about, and needed verbal assistance. I think I was the first person to have verbal contact with him in six months. But he was damn good at running the network so no one cared. I couldn’t find anyone who had actually seen him face to face for years.
So yes, autism doesn’t necessarily mean you are stupid. But in Greta’s case, she hasn’t shown any technical brilliance or real education, just a talent for shouting at people. I’d say it’s a handicap because she can’t deal with people but has nothing else to show for it.
@Supporter of Biden
In that case you still raised a chuckle but you probably wont appreciate me laughing at your posts
Lurker. I did make some good jokes.
