bell hooks

For the great many of us whose writing is informed by her work, we will continue to use our words to fearlessly contend with white supremacy while never letting patriarchy off the hook.

OK

Aint I a Woman? was the first bell hooks book I read. I was in my final semester of graduate school at the time. At 23, I considered myself to be socially conscious. Prior to engaging with her work, I would wax poetic about injustice and the ways that systemic racism effectively launched weapons of mass destruction in my community. I would tell you that the “war on drugs” was nothing short of a war on Black men, and how the prison-industrial complex was another form of slavery. While the data indicates that there is a disproportionate number of Black men incarcerated, I failed to consider how these same systems of oppression also harmed Black women specifically. I did not have the range or language to even consider the ways in which race, class, and gender intersect and how this should frame my work and thinking around criminal justice reform. The more I studied her work the more I realized how much of my formal education left me with gaping holes in my thinking.

Ah, so teaching you how to write wasn’t a big part of it then?

Shanita Hubbard is an adjunct professor of sociology

In USian, an adjunct professor is a contract lecturer. Paid around minimum wage, possinly below. Which might be why this reads like something paid by the word….

  1. Sam, let’s be honest – the only way she could get into University was on a ‘ Grievance Studies’ course.

    ISiT, narcissism and pretentiousness.

Not good enough for a four year university/college. Not good enough for a tenure track position. In sociology. Sociology. Think about that.

It should probably read adjunct professor of sociology and Grubhub driver.

Usually with a PhD. Let that sink in. So many PhD’s in the US that there aren’t enough TT positions so after spending almost a decade in training and a shitton of money expended (usually through taking on massive debt) they’re doing job that someone with an Associate’s and a lesson plan could do and where waiting bar would pay more.

Actually, I guarantee you she’s making less than an elementary school gym teacher. It’s hard to dissuade those who fancy themselves as being the Smart Ones from doing really, really stupid things.

One thing to note: The fact that she’s an adjunct at the community college level emphasizes the fact that in the US, the overcapacity in higher education virtually guarantees you can get a PhD if you’re willing to pay for one.

That’s pretty much the case in the UK, too (in non-STEM subjects, at least). The days of having to produce original research are long gone.
