Fisker and his electric car

Thought this had already gone bust once but perhaps that’s my memory. What this definitely is is a puff piece:

Yadda, yadda,

All of this is to allow him to make cars at speed, and pack in the latest technology.

“If you buy an electric car today, that technology was most likely chosen three years ago. When you buy our car next year, we’ve chosen this year,” which, Fisker says, means better batteries and longer ranges.

I think that’s probably not true you know. If you’re going to build at volume then your supplier must be building at volume. Something which simply takes time to do. Look at the problems with chips this year. Buying things by the million requires ramp up and preparation.

Oh, and that tactic of building the SUV just so as to be able to getting to the really snazzy sports car – maybe not all that wondrous as a technological path…..

  1. He points to the recently launched Nissan Ariya electric SUV, which starts at £42,000. He compares it to Fisker’s original Ocean model, which he plans to sell for £34,990 with a range from 275 miles.

    My Sportage cost me €24,500 with a range of >700km

    I don’t think I’ll be Fisked in the near future…

    How many people? If I stand at the end of my road, how many cars will I see from companies established in the past 20 years? My odds of seeing a Tesla are about the same as seeing a Porsche.

    The thing with the iPhone is that it cost less than £1000 and can’t kill you. A car costs at least 20 times that and can. So most people are more conservative about cars. It’s a big investment. People pay the premium for VW Golfs because they have 40 years of rock-solid reputation. I’m sure there are unhappy Golf owners, but I’ve never met one.

I’m old, so despite my historical interest in and racing of crazy motorcars I now content myself with something practical and cheap to run… My diesel Focus (bought second-hand for £6000) takes three minutes to fill and is then capable of at least 650 miles before needing to visit a filling-station again. It also has £0.00 road tax.. 🙂

    Re: “lobotomy” (I think that the more acceptable term nowadays is “leucotomy”) – I was under the impression that it was the preserve of BMW and Audi drivers (plus the occasional Mercedes). Maybe I’m mixing with the wrong type.

    Physics is a reality. Promising magic batteries is a clear red flag.

    New cars are pretty mental to me. I drive an 18 year Polo that I picked up for £600 and does the job. We wanted something cheap for my daughter to learn to drive in. It’s pretty tidy. And I wouldn’t buy anything newer than say, a 4 year old Golf. There are cars on Autotrader with 12K on them, going for about half the new price.

    One of the very few things I know about Apple mobile phones is that you can’t remove and replace the battery…..

    No. It’s about people’s lived experience, and that “40 year” thing is about how much better VW Golfs were than the competition when they first came out. It doesn’t even have to be best reliable, but reliable and with a history of it. So when you buy it, it’s going to be fine.

    Also, how do they measure that? Is it breaking down on the motorway, or something more trivial? In my experience almost no car of those top 15 has significant problems (except Citroen). In general, all cars are very reliable where it matters today.

    Just to add: the Toyota Aygo was my first choice. I owned a Toyota that was amazing and would do another, but our tyre dealer had a cheap car and better to buy from who you know. Was going to spend about £2000 on a car, but £600 is better. And it’s in nice nick. I don’t think the previous owner ever ate a Big Mac in there.

  10. Can you get a car safety certified within a year, in either the US or EU? I doubt it’s possible, and it costs so much that individual manufacturers can barely afford it.

    Since when was ANYTHING made by Apple “Cheaper” than the competition?

    Over the air updates that slow your car down considerably?

    What do they think Apple did for the mobile phone market?

    They refined a really good form factor. That’s it. Oh, and lock access to third party apps.

    They didn’t make phones more accessible or cheaper – the iPhone was freaking expensive and only available from one carrier. They didn’t invent smartphones.
