  1. Professor Edgeworth David’s wife Caroline mentions in her book describing their sea voyage to the atoll of Funafuti in 1896 that they had been recommended cocaine to cope with sea sickness. She draws “a discreet veil” over the subsequent outcome.

  2. Cocaine was made illegal in 1920. The half-century or so before that was perhaps the UK’s golden years. For all the risks, cocaine does appear to boost productivity.

  3. For some reason I read the topic as ‘the Metropolitan Line’ and briefly wondered how enough pollen got into the carriages to be troublesome.
