It’s an idiot suggestion alright

Could reparations be the strategic tool for Europe to remove China’s hold on the Caribbean, and for these islands to throw off the shackles of poor governance, underdevelopment and inequality once and for all? It could be pure genius

Hmm.

However, in the ex-British territories of the West Indies this is not a popcorn moment. Similar scenes of state capture unfold in these islands and, to be honest, it is just not cricket. Very few politicians here play with a straight bat and even when caught out, the umpire is seemingly blind. Spectators are leaving in droves: a massive brain drain has weakened Caribbean economies significantly over the past five decades, alongside cronyism, state capture and procurement fraud. The politicians left behind to run these countries are the most unqualified and unscrupulous one can find, a state referred to as a kakistocracy.

Places that are shittily ruled by shits. We should send them lots of money. Oh Aye?

  1. We’ve already given reparations to the populations of the British Carribean by taking the population to the British Carribean in the first place, giving them freedom, citizenship and freedom of movement within the greatest empire in the world at that point, and a plot of land, liberating them from the clutches of the slave traders whose ships we pirated, and from the slavers back home who’d just re-capture them and re-sell them if we’d taken them back.

  2. Why would we want to stop China taking over Wales and Scotland?

    Proximity?

I don’t mind the CCP taking over the Caribbean and the shittier bits of sub-Saharan Africa – best of luck to ’em – but prefer their influence to be further away from Blighty.

On the subject of Fascist China and farther away from Blighty, Paul Keating has managed to get some publicity by being rude about Liz Truss and the UK. Apparently we should butt out of Asia and let people like him sell Australia to the CCP. It’s rather ironic that he hates the former colonial power but can’t wait to bend over for the new empire-builders.

  3. Reparations? Does the article refer to the reparations we (and the rest of the world) should be demanding from the CCP for sending us kung flu?

  4. Didn’t they want to be independent?

Will China make money out of these neo-colonies? Or is the plan fatally flawed because China can lend them money to build infrastructure but when they inevitably default the building and roads and harbours will still be there.

  5. Keating…

“On his father’s side, Keating was descended from Irish immigrants born in counties Galway, Roscommon, and Tipperary. On his mother’s side, he was of mixed English and Irish descent. His maternal grandfather, Fred Chapman, was the son of two convicts, John Chapman and Sarah Gallagher, both of whom had been transported for theft in the 1830s.” (Wiki)

  6. ‘– but prefer their influence to be further away from Blighty.’

Bit too late for that I’m afraid – see Cambridge University.

  7. Certainly. The descendants of the chiefs of Dahomey should pay enormous reparations for selling off conquered populations, and the more inconvenient and profitable parts of their own populations. Leave the European and American middlemen out of it.

  8. squawkbox, I’d argue that they should also pay reparations to the Europeans and Americans for dumping their surplus population on them.

Indeed since they’re still doing it, they should pay all costs involved as well as the appropriate reparations.

  9. @MC, Paul Keating always was a dickhead about foreign relations. He was pretty good as Treasurer, as PM he got obsessed with the Asia thing and that seems to have led him into being a China shill. I’m pretty sure he’s seeing that through his economic rose coloured glasses but his morals have evaporated.

Australia has a bit of an ex PM problem. With a couple of exceptions, they just won’t shut up.

  10. Nah… Let the China thing happen.. Maybe the ungrateful bastards will finally figure out it isn’t fun to live under a “gentle master” whose basic culture doesn’t even understand or recognise individuals under “extended family” level.
And has 2 *millennia* of experience in enforcing what they want to see happen. Offtime Not pretty.

If you thought classic communism was bad.. Confucianism fun!! The social mores derived from it even more so!!
