Goldberg made the comments during a discussion about a Tennessee school board’s decision to ban the Pulitzer prize-winning Holocaust graphic novel Maus.
“Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about. These are two groups of white people,” she said on The View on Monday.
She continued: “You’re missing the point … let’s talk about it for what it really is. It’s about how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, Jews … everybody eats each other.”
But then there’s a very strong whiff of antisemitism in certain corners of Black American life. Actually, there’s more than a whiff of racism in certain corners – those Korean shopkeepers weren’t there on the rooves in LA worrying about the white mob after all. The Nation of Islam doesn’t help either.
‘These are two groups of white people,’
Should I read this to mean, ‘These are just two groups of Untermensch?’
Is taking a Jewish stage name cultural appropriation?
Goldberg very Asian?
Oh dear Sam, Bach to the drawing board for you.
Jesse Jackson is notoriously anti Semitic and made no secret of it in the 80s.
But there are several strands which come together quite nicely in Goldberg’s rant :
Belief that racism is only performed by wypipo on other races and that blacks are at the bottom of the heap.
Black anti Semitism.
Left’s anti Semtism ( seeing Israel as the oppressor and aggressor in the MidEast and translating this into a general Jew hatred).
It makes a toxic combination.
Hitler wasn’t really interested in a “black problem”. He saw the Jews, Gypsies and Slavs as polluting the European bloodstream, which is why they had to be eradicated.
I’m a bit sensitive to this at the moment. I am helping some Jewish friends with tracing their grandparenrs killed in the Shoah.
I can see her point. Had there been a significant black population Hitler would have added them to the list. Maybe he did but they have been forgotten even more that the other non Jews.
There’s been a definite move away from wanting to be considered White by Jews living in the US in the last five to ten years; coincidentally ever since the left redefined racism as a combination of prejudice + power.
…a Tennessee school board’s decision to ban the Pulitzer prize-winning Holocaust graphic novel Maus.
That is standard Lefty bullshit. It wasn’t banned; it was removed from the eighth-grade curriculum because it was thought to be inappropriate for 13-year olds. It’s still available in the school library.

If AH were around today, then his thinking would be different. Turks and Africans in Germany would be high up the list, primarily due to the dangesr of miscegenation. There was an African population in Hamburg and port places, not many though. As far as I know they were ignored, but I am willing to be proven wrong on this. But it is all ifs and and and pots and pans.
But the essential difference as far as the Nazis were concened was that Jews had money and power. This is the common thread in 19th and 20th Cent anti Semitism. The Slavs polluted the Lebensraum and that is why they had to be made slaves or be “removed”.
There were a few mixed-race Germans – some left behind by French Colonial troops. But no policy of extermination – too few to worry about.

Talking of Slavs, a BBC website says this
“The term slave has its origins in the word slav. The slavs, who inhabited a large part of Eastern Europe, were taken as slaves by the Muslims of Spain during the ninth century AD.”
Does Olusoga know? Mind you, the sentence does gloss over how Muslims in Spain enslaved people in Eastern Europe but it’s from the BBC and therefore must be correct. As for Whoopi, I hope she soon travels to a country where Holocaust denial is a crime. It should make for an interesting court case
Weren’t the Spanish Muslims, or not so much. Ottomans. Used to raise a slave levy every year from the Balkans/Ukraine etc. Did that for hundreds of years, well into late 19th cent.
Tim
Indeed yes. The devsirme rounded up likely lads from Balkan villages. Some joined the civil service some the army. Many became eunuchs or Janisseries. It was common for a devsirme boy to reach the top as a Pasha. The chap who ran the Siege of Vienna in 1683 Kamal Pasha was such a one, I believe.
The connection between Slav and slave started well before the Ottomans, the word slave itself is from Byzantine Greek.
Tim you’re reminding me of Florence Barbara Maria von Sass, freed or purchased or whatever in the Ottoman Empire by Samuel Baker. He eventually married her. This was in 1859, so slavery was still the thing there well into the 19th century.
The fat twat is partially right. Jews are not a race distinct from their Christian or Muslim neighbours.
phillip, Jews disagree with you:

It was race, but not race-race.
Yet another reminder that race is a social construct and not an objective biological fact
‘ It’s about how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, Jews … everybody eats each other.”
The situation in 1930s/40s wasn’t one of reciprocity between two sections of society. It was unilateral: about the obsessive persecution of one sector of society defined by their race – Jewish – by a particularly ruling group (not the Body Politic) driven by a vile ideology based in Socialism and racial purity. The Jews weren’t trying to ‘eat’ anyone.
Just as now there is a group on the Left with a vile ideology persecuting a sector of society defined by their race – White – who in this case are the majority. The Jews being a small minority could do nothing about it, but why White people in large majority don’t do something about it, defies reason.
“But the essential difference as far as the Nazis were concened was that Jews had money and power.”
That’s more of an excuse than a reason. Anti-Semitism was never a particularly Nazi thing. Anti-Semitism was common right across E. Europe. Anywhere there were Jews. It wasn’t because they were rich. Most Jews weren’t. There’s a Jewish joke about two Jews walking beside a railway track in Russia. One picks up a Moscow newspaper has been thrown from a train & is reading it to his friend. “It says here, the Jews intend to rule the world” “Is that right?” his friend replies. “When we do, do you think I can have a goat?” The Jews in the shtetls were dirt poor.
Anti-Semitism is because Jews. They do it to themselves. Because they don’t integrate. They insist on being separate & different. They’re never fully part of the community, wherever they are. And the inevitable happens. Whenever there are bad times people look round for someone to blame. And they’re conveniently available. Because they’re identifiably different.
Germany’s Jews (before the German state existed) were originally pretty well integrated. For Jews. Then the pogroms in Russia drove a lot of them west into Central Europe. Go walk around London’s Stamford Hill & see what arrived. The Hassidim colonised the area still go on as if they were back in C19th Russia with their fur hats & long black coats & knickerbockers. They’re a totally separate community. Impenetrable. And importantly, very noticeable.
The Nazis didn’t create anti-Semitism. It was around long before they were. They used it. It was the same with the Roma. Although if you want to find people really dislike Roma, go to Romania. Same reason. Different & separate
But then there’s a very strong whiff of antisemitism in certain corners of Black American life.
The British have a way with understatement.
@JohnB
The Woke Revolution is copying the Nazis. Wholesale. Division. Distrust & dehumanisation of the different. But that can bite back. Depends which group gets on top. There’s no guarantee that’ll be the Woke’s favourites.
@Matthew L
“Yet another reminder that race is a social construct and not an objective biological fact”
Science treats it as if it is. It sees two groups of finches. One has green tips to its wings. The other blue. So it says they’re different species, let alone races. Are they? They don’t interbreed because they’re separated geographically. Why they diverged in the first place. If they weren’t, could they? Maybe not because they’ve also evolved different courting behaviours. Sounds like humans, doesn’t it? But are they truly separate species or variations on a theme.
Anti-Semitism is because Jews. They do it to themselves. Because they don’t integrate.
Fucking Yid bastards, eh?
Well, even regular Israelis don’t much like the anachronistically dressed weird beards so there’s always an element of “othering” going to happen to self-isolating groups; and that applies even if they don’t particularly visually stand out (Jehovah’s Witnesses, Plymouth Brethren, the Welsh).
But the really mad anti-Semitic frothings concern themselves with Jews who do integrate into society, whether it be banking, legal services, intellectual political ideology or arts and entertainment. They’re the ones who are feared and resented.
So your notion is just bollocks, really.
If they weren’t, could they? Maybe not because they’ve also evolved different courting behaviours.
Genetic studies and forced interbreeding has shown that a lot of bird “species” aren’t strictly species. It might be possible to create a Golders Green Finch that everyone can hate.
On a holiday visit to Wittenberg a couple of years ago, we came across a Judensau, an extremely anti-Semitic carving on the façade of the church where Luther preached. It dates from 1305. Such carvings still survive across Germany and in Switzerland and Alsace.
Is taking a Jewish stage name cultural appropriation?
It’s OK, she took it from self-hating Jews.
Split by a common language. In America “race” is skin colour, in Europe “race” is Irish vs Welsh vs Scots vs English vs Flemish vs Danes vs Roma vs Waloons vs Ruthenians vs Toutons vs Samis vs Bohemians vs Swabians vs……………..
I was surprised to learn that there are only about 15M Jews in the entire world. About half are in the US and another 30% in Israel. There really aren’t many in Europe since the Holocaust – who can blame them. It baffles me how so much hate is directed toward such a small group of people.
@PJF
We have exactly the same here. We have Brits who come here, learn the language, integrate into Spanish society. And Brits who come here determined to remain Brits & separate. Don’t try to learn the language, shop at Brit shops not Spanish, socialise mostly in the Brit community. There are Spanish who don’t much the Brits. (Not saying I blame them) So which group do they regard us as all being? More importantly, who’s fault is it? It’s not the Spanish. They didn’t ask us to come here.
You might not like it but that’s how people are.
@TD:
It baffles me how so much hate is directed toward such a small group of people.
If I lived in a small town with, say, 9 pubs and 6 cafes and I’d been barred from all of them and I then concluded that it was not my fault but the fault of the pubs and cafes, would you think I was right?
jgh
This is getting into Kingston Trio territory: “the French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles; Italians hate Yuogoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch, and I don’t like anyone very much”.
Unlikely to be wokely-acceptable these days.
In almost all discussion in the US “race” means only black/white. To that extent she’s right even though in the bigger picture she’s quite wrong. Maybe she should have said “race race”.
The other argument is that ‘race is just a social construct’ but only a fool or a crook could believe that.
BiS selectively quoted me
What I said was
But the essential difference as far as the Nazis were concened was that Jews had money and power. This is the common thread in 19th and 20th Cent anti Semitism.
Especially look up Houston Stewart Chamberlain’s “Foundations of the Nineteenth Century”. It is the textbook that Hitler heavily borrows from.
If I lived in a small town with, say, 9 pubs and 6 cafes and I’d been barred from all of them and I then concluded that it was not my fault but the fault of the pubs and cafes, would you think I was right?
The town is Dachau and your name is Jonathan Goldstein . . .
Too subtle for you eh?
Then let me put it another way: if, as a people, you have lived in other people’s countries – people of different races, cultures, languages, civilisations, religions and even different continents over the course of the last two and a half thousand years – and they have all come to hate you. It’s you who are the problem, not everybody else on Earth.
Too subtle for you eh?
Lol. There really isn’t much subtle about you, Jonathan.
Apart from the timescale, your latest sophistry could easily apply to the English.
Sure. Lol.
Judaism is a religion, but due to historical separation from others, it has evolved into a “race” of Ashkenazis and Sephardim, as well as other subsets of the population.
And of course, the Holocaust was entirely predicated on the idea of Jews being a race of people.
But the crux of why people are pissed at Whoopi is because she was clearly trying to make it about her and her people. In the U.S. it’s common for people to act as if the entire topics of race and slavery are owned by African-Americans, and as if all oppression is owned by white people.
Hence Whoopi’s “the Holocaust didn’t count” rhetoric.
And Tim is right. There’s a certain segment of the black population that promotes anti-Semitism. Specifically the convert-to-Islam segment. Fun fact…Bill Clinton shared a stage with Louis Farrakhan a few years ago, because they both were invited to Aretha Franklin’s funeral.
Huffduff there are plenty of anti Semitic blacks out there who aren’t converts….And what occurred in Rwanda? Sudan? I wish these people would do a bit of ‘let those without sin’ etc.
