Burger King’s partner has refused to close its 800 Russian restaurants, blocking the US fast food giant’s bid to shut down there following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King, said it had demanded its largest franchise partner in Russia, Alexander Kolobov suspend operations but “he has refused to do so”.

David Shear, RBI president, told staff: “Would we like to suspend all Burger King operations immediately in Russia? Yes. Are we able to enforce a suspension of operations today? No.”

Just one of those things that those in favour of stakeholder rights might like to consider. Some of the stakeholders might not like, might not agree with, might not even follow, your wishes….

    The problem is with the word “stakeholder” which seeks to create a false parity between all parties with an interest in the entreprise. The shareholders rank equally as stakeholders with the tax authorities and the owners of the sandwich shop that provides some of the employees with their lunch.

    Without knowing the terms of the franchise agreement, there is not much to this story, though. If RBI don’t supply the Russian franchisee with any of the inputs for his business and the product is still ‘in spec’, there’s no reason the situation can’t continue ad infinitum.

    Even if Kolobov is in breach of the franchise agreement, there’s little chance of obtaining, far less enforcing, a ruling against him.

    Big business was consumed by social justice AIDS a long time ago. If putting out adverts accusing their own customers of being rapey misogynists didn’t clue us in, their desperation to let us know they’re 100% in favour of Remain, BLM, trannies, Greeniebollocks, and everything else that’s trending on Twitter should’ve.

    PJF – imagine thinking latter-day Pharisees ostentatiously rending their garments at the expense of small business owners and minimum wage employees in Russia has anything to do with morals. They’re still A-OK with selling hamburgers and sugarwater to people who execute gays or put minorities in concentration camps. Not to mention the countries that invaded Iraq and killed hordes of innocent people for no good reason whatsoever.

    If they leave Russia, it will be because it’s economy is a disaster and their profits will be marginal.

If it’s the lack of profit motive that bothers you, then surely killing hundreds of thousands of other people you don’t give a shit about – for oil – is a good thing.

    If you’re not concerned about the increasingly militant tendency of woke capital to deplatform its own customers over petty political virtue signaling, I don’t know what else to tell you.

    But we’re lucky to have achieved a Brexit referendum in 2016 rather than Current Year, there’s an excellent chance going forward that any form of political activity the establishment disapproves of will be instantly rebranded as Russian-controlled racist extremism and subject to immediate removal from the internet and denial of service from banks and payment processors. It also really wasn’t that long ago that Burger King UK was using its social media presence to encourage people to throw its branded milkshakes at Nigel Farage.
