He is, you know, he is

He’s calling for control and censorship:

He said while rising industry standards are helpful, solid regulation is needed to address social media companies’ business models and the way they design their products.

“These companies need to have some other north star other than just making money and increasing market share,” Obama said.

Can’t just have people saying whatever they want. How will Ds get elected if that’s allowed?

  1. They seem to be getting elected regardless. So what they really want is to stop people pointing out the inevitable consequences of doing so.

  2. companies need to have some other north star other than just making money and increasing market share

This seems a popular view these days, especially amongst large corporations and their investors. Or rather the people who manage their investors’ money.

Personally, I would like big business and institutional investors to collectively shut the fuck up and focus on their fiduciary duty to investors and customers, while obeying the law.

  3. ‘Personally, I would like big business and institutional investors to collectively shut the fuck up and focus on their fiduciary duty to investors and customers, while obeying the law.’

Far too sensible MC. It’ll never happen.

  4. “Do we allow our democracy to wither, or do we make it better?” Obama asked. “That is the choice.”

Aah, Obama’s go-to argument: either you are with me on this one or you are an enemy of democracy/Jesus/goodness. His mate Bruce Springsteen used the same tactic with his appeal for the “middle ground” in his Superbowl advert. The middle ground being occupied OF COURSE by Brucey himself.

Well, Obamas, Springsteen and Neil Young are all fucking twats anyway. Michael Obama, what a bloke! Probably still has a cock, rogers Barack.

  6. What’s Obama’s ‘north star’ if it isn’t making money?

I’ve no idea how they managed it, but over the last few decades, maybe longer I dunno, these despicable cunts have so divided us that they can tell completely brazen lies, commit vast crimes, trouser tens and even hundreds of millions, and something like 50% of the population will fucking carry them head high through the streets, cheering.

It is actually quite impressive in its own way.

  7. I’m noticing Obama isn’t creating his own platform (using all of that income from the public speaking circuit) where he can do just that.

By the way, how can he possibly accept money for standing at a podium and pulling words out of his ass? Isn’t there a more noble “north star” at which he can aim?

It takes a bit of time, but companies that choose to follow some different woke north star and forget their fiduciary duties eventually tend to have their lunch eaten by some upstart firm more focused on business. Exhibit 1 might be the US auto industry that was churning out nothing but crap in the ‘70s and ‘80s and lost a huge amount of business to the Japanese.

  9. @TD That’s precisely what is happening with Twitter right now. There is the threat of legal recourse as the board is acting to defeat Elon Musk, and not in the interest of their shareholders.

What I tend to hear a lot in these situations, is that investors both large and small could care less about the company’s long-term success. They want the instant gratification of short-term growth, after which they abandon ship at the slightest indication of a downturn and look for the next thing. I definitely meet a lot of people using that strategy in NYC.

Makes logical sense, sure, but it doesn’t encourage the best business practices either.

  10. Obama is essentially arguing for some sort of “truth commission” to vet what is true or not true. Essentially, a return of heresy laws and the inquisition. Perhaps a gentler type of inquisition, with the power to muzzle you or even incarcerate if necessary, but probably short of the auto de fey. After all, we’ll lose our democracy if we can’t shut the half of people up who disagree with us.

  11. Dennis, Pointing Out The Obvious

Obama has always been a statist. This is nothing new.

What is new is that we now have evidence (Spotify) that nobody really gives a fuck what he thinks.

And nobody has forgotten that it was he who foisted Joe Biden upon us all.

I’m not sure that’s a great example. The problem of the US auto makers was that they focussed on making money over keeping customers happy.

The best “northstar” as far as I’m concerned is making customers happy combined with a margin that keeps investors happy. “Love of money is the root of all evil” doesn’t mean that you can’t have a giant yacht and drink Cristal all day, but that shouldn’t be what motivates you.

The insane attention to detail of Steve Jobs, how much Nintendo innovate around gaming, how much companies like Honda put into quality control beyond what the customer notices. You have to make sure there’s a margin, but making great products and services is what works, and if you do it, you don’t have to worry about the money, because customers will break down your door to get it. They won’t even care that you’re charging 20% more, because you solve their problems.

It’s like CEOs of companies getting interviewed by BBC news. It’s pure ego, nothing to do with improving the company. They want to be respected by Eloi pricks like Will Hutton rather than looking after the Morlocks.
