Jane Austen has been replaced on a university literature course to help “decolonisation of the curriculum”.
The author of Pride and Prejudice has been replaced by Toni Morrison, an writer known for works about the African American experience, as the focus of an English module at Stirling University.
Morrison is rather that colonialism experience of slavery and racism. Austen isn’t. So, drop the one not talking about it to de- it?
“an writer”?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young person in possession of a state loan must be in want of a wall to piss it against.
How long before adaptations of Ms Austen’s work are given the Bridgerton treatment?
/applause for Sam Vara
Jesus H Tapdancing Christ. The point of literature like Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Austen is that they say something about the human condition. Something that is universal to all people of whatever time or place. It’s why Kurosawa adapted a load of Shakespeare into old Japan, or West Side Story or Forbidden Planet. Austen has been adapted into a Bollywood musical (Bride and Prejudice) and Clueless (based on Emma) which is set in modern Beverley Hills.
Most of university is just a madrassa now, though. They could be studying Biggles books. All it is to show is that you’ll do as you’re told and work hard at it.
How long until “Mr Darcy was a slaver” raises its ridiculous head?
@BoM4: Not a chance, Biggles was a colonialist and racist.
Jane Austen – meh – a canon of heroines but nary a mention of dysmenorrhœa or tampon poverty.
Jane Austen is a card carrying Pro Putin fascist. It is high time that she was cancelled.
Pride and Prejudice ?
Pride at owning slaves, Prejudice against Black People.
Sense and Sensibility ?
Sense of investing in slaves, Sensibility taking pleasure in their ownership,
Mansfield Park ?
An estatev built on the backs of slaves.
etc
Arthur the cat:
Just pronounce it “Mr. Darkie”, and all problems disappear.
‘How long until “Mr Darcy was a slaver” raises its ridiculous head?’
Sir Thomas Bertram in Mansfield Park is a slave owner, and Jane Austen clearly disapproves.
“Jane Austen – meh – a canon of heroines but nary a mention of dysmenorrhœa or tampon poverty.”
No mention of abortion either.
Stirling was my university, and it was weird when I was there almost 40 years ago. Soon after I started and switched from physics to education, they abolished the physics department. A few years after completing Computing Science they abolished the computing department. From reading lists of alumni it was and is a hotbed of narcissist political fanatasists. This is also the place where I spent three years doing a “Computing” course thinking “when am I going to do some, y’know, *actual* computing? Y’know, the sort of stuff I’ve already been doing in my own time for five years before getting here.”. Not realising that in university parlance, “computing” == “driving a car”.
So, the UK has to be ‘decolonised’ by removing British writers and replacing them with non-British writers.
Seems like colonisation to me…
And where are the transwomen eh ?
@Ottokring
George Sand & George Eliot?
Robert Galbraith is now persona non grata.
Well played,Sam!
“Anti-racist” means choosing one over the other, rather than trying to include both.
If they included both, someone might notice the difference in quality
The real surprise here is that Stirling has an Eng. Lit. course.
