Fight! Fight! Fight!

Adm. Linda Fagan was sworn in Wednesday by President Biden as the 27th commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, becoming the first woman to lead the service.

With her appointment, Fagan also becomes the first female service chief in American history.

But, but, the department of health’s officer corps (or whatever it is) is led by a 4* bloke in a frock making xe the first female service chief, surely?

Two first female service chiefs? Is this like a bad burrito, something that keeps repeating on us?

  1. I’m naturally overjoyed to see these heroines—–ooops heroes take up the dirty and dangerous work while idle blokes like me loll in front of my computer screen.

  2. Ah, but Dr. Richard Leland Levine will never be a real woman, no matter how much surgery it has. It will only be a butchered bloke in a dress.

  3. Two first female service chiefs?

No, the bloke in a frock is not female. The clue is in the word “bloke”.

The US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is not a branch of military service.

It’s a bunch of medical professionals who can’t find real jobs running around doing nothing while wearing a uniform.

  5. “the reputation of the Coast Guard”: it can’t be all three of the classic rum, buggery, and the lash.

It is still one of the 7 uniformed services and is included when talking about ‘service chiefs’ – along with NOAA.

    Agamemnon,
it may be a uniformed service but I’m sure the Salvation Army would best them if push came to shove.
Quick fit fitters wear “uniform” and provide a service but at least the don’t walt it up like the tranny admiral.

What part of “The US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is not a branch of military service” don’t you understand?

Obviously the Sally Army are not one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. (It’s gone up from 7 to 8 due to the Space Force.) The original claim was “With her appointment, Fagan also becomes the first female service chief in American history”. So the point of contention is the phrase “first female service chief”, where “service chief” which might well be taken as referring to the uniformed services (which includes NOAA and the PHSCC) or alternatively as the military services specifically (the other six: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard). Pendantically, the chief of the PHSCC is not the chief of a military service, but they are the chief of a uniformed service. For my money, “service chief” without any qualification should probably – unless the context is clearly military – extend to all 8 services. Which is why I think it’s legit for Timmy to bring the PHSCC into it.

How many tank divisions have they got?

Dunno.. I know one SA officer who has two fully functional cannons on swivel mounts** …
If I’d mount those on the tuktuk we use for Outreach… would that count? 😛

** admittedly, they’re meant for the usual saluting/starting of races at naval events, but they’re fully functional blackpowder cannon(ette)s***.

Which functionality we, of course, never tested because that would be Illegal, m’kaaay? 0:)

If you want to try to equate the weathermen of the NOAA with the infantrymen of the US Army, be my guest. We can all use a good laugh.

Having a women being picked to head a civilian agency of the federal government is not a big deal. It’s been done before. Honest. Having a woman picked to head one of the five armed services of the US government is a big deal, because it is a first.

    Got it?

  14. @Dennis

The NOAA and PHSCC aren’t just “agencies” of the US government, they are uniformed services. Depending on your definition of “female” or “woman”, they may or may not have had a female/woman service chief before. The claim under discussion in the quote was “first female service chief”, not “first female agency head” and not “first female armed services chief”.

And you’re still getting the numbers wrong. There are 8 uniformed services, 6 (not 5) of which are armed services. I know it’s hard to count things when it goes beyond the fingers of one hand, but if you start using the fingers on your other hand you’ll discover it’s six.
