Polar bears in decline

A previously unknown population of polar bears has been found living in south-east Greenland, and rather than hunting seals from sea ice, they make do with hopping on to chunks of freshwater ice that calve off glaciers.

The remote region had been poorly studied until now because of its unpredictable weather, jagged mountains and heavy snowfall, which makes the area inaccessible.

But a seven-year project has found a few hundred polar bears thriving

Oh, right, hundreds of ’em, just ‘angin’ around and uncounted. But you shall nibble your turnip, shivering in the dark, and be happy to save the polar bear.

  1. Mr. Monbiot said that if reintroduced to the Northumbrian coast, the bears would thrive and provide much-needed revenue.

  2. Apparently a polar bear’s skin is black.

Of course you’d have a shoot one to examine it to be sure.

Probbaly best to shoot any other bears in the vicinity whilst you’re at it, for safety reasons.

  3. So more polar bears, and they are only surviving because of the break up of the ice. Quick, close more power stations.

Damn straight Tim – and at the recent Davos summit that was the exact message. Not sure when people are going to wake up and smell the coffee..

  5. Time for harrowing photos of polar bears standing on small chunks of fresh water ice 50m from the shore, and the caption “Polar Bears Driven to Extinction”. The article will then fail to mention the fact that the longest recorded polar bear swim is apparently 427 miles.

  6. I read somewhere recently that grizzly / polar bear crosses are historically rare but increasingly common. This was interpreted as a threat to both. But the offspring are fertile (unlike mules) and the increasing interaction can only be because the geographical boundaries have merged. This sounds to me a good thing. Both bears are at the apex so that means all the creatures they prey on are thriving too.
    But I’m not an ursologist.

It would be an interesting experiment to introduce one into the Moonbat’s gaff.

  8. I’m imagining a Monty Python sketch here:

“No, no, no. They ain’t in decline, squire… they’re just ‘idin!”
“’Idin? ‘Idin? What kind of talk is that? Where are they all, then? ‘Oppin on chunks of freshwater ice wot calve off glaciers in south-east Greenland, where we can’t see ’em on account of its unpredictable weather, jagged mountains and heavy snowfall?”
    “Yeah. Look.”
“Oh. Well I’ll be off, then.”

  9. Were the bears hiding from David Attenborough? Would you want a part in a film you don’t get paid for?

  10. “Not sure when people are going to wake up and smell the coffee..”

I think the next elections in the West are going to give us a clue about this. The disruption caused by Ukraine/Lockdowns/Money printing have given the masses a sneak prevue of life under ‘Net Zero’ and I suspect they won’t be happy with what they are experiencing. In the UK the Reform Party will be advocating for re-starting fracking, and hopefully will get the message that there are votes to be won in being the first party to be anti-Net Zero. I suspect that Trump in 2024 (if he is the candidate) will try to mine that seam as well.

  11. Andrew C: yes it is black. I’ve seen a piece. Luckily I didn’t have to shoot the bear to find out.

I hope Reform can get somewhere but I’m not too hopeful. The problem they have is funding their tax-cutting agenda until it pays dividends in improving economic activity. They also need a Plan B for the ‘Events, dear boy. Events!’ scenario.

  12. Have you ever thought how many cute baby seals are murdered and eaten by polar bears? Have you asked the mommy seals whether they prefer survival or extinction for polar bears

The UK State spends over £1tn per year, are you telling me that you couldn’t identify 10% of that that was either totally wasted, or spent on people who would never vote for you in a million years anyway?
