President Macron’s economy minister has angered farmers by suggesting that he will fight inflation by allowing buy-one-get-one-free offers, which are banned under French law.

Farming union leaders expressed indignation at Bruno Le Maire’s plan to allow supermarkets to sell food products at up to 50 per cent off the list price.

Where the producers get to demand the price at which things are sold. Rather than having to compete…..

  1. And just what that dead man walking Boris is proposing for huge numbers of food products in England from October.

  2. Hang on, in a French hypermarket last year, there was a buy 5 for the price of 3 offer on packs of 20 toilet rolls. Trolleys were being filled. So it seems unlikely that BoGoF offers are illegal in France

  3. Maybe they’re illegal for food items… The farming lobby in seriously influential in France. I doubt that there’s much lobbying on behalf of bog-roll.

  4. It is just good stuff in France as part of the: fight against obesity; reduction of food waste; reducing global warming; saving the Planet… choose your preferred cause.

But the supermarkets still have to buy the ‘free’ item from the farmers don’t they? Why is that bad for farmers – am I missing something?

  5. John B, I remember seeing something in the UK stating that many of the ‘supermarket’ offers were actually ‘manufacturer’ offers and there was a merry-go-round where Tesco would have an item on special one week, then it would be on special in Asda the next week, Sainsburys’ the week after. This was a long time ago and before Lidl and Aldi were in the mix.

Hasn’t that been kicked into touch? Part of Boris’s partygate survival scrape?

It’s quite useful having a PM who is desperate to cling on; he has to listen to his back benchers more as well as keep in touch with reality. Our coal power stations have had a stay of execution . . .

  7. PJF – we can hope, eh?

I don’t know why the British establishment hates Boris so much, he’s a big fat liberal pussy just like they are.

Tony Blair and David Cameron never provoked such spittle-flecked moral outrage, even when they were committing war crimes. But it is similar to how Corbyn was monstered and portrayed as some sort of Jew-hating Communist revolutionary.

In this case I’d suggest your question is the answer to your question.

Indeed, and that could just as easily apply to Corbyn.

Surely, Johnson won’t resign, because we are under the control of fascists, and fascists don’t obey democracy so he’ll just do a funny evil laugh and carry on? © Richard Murphy.

  11. Dennis, PJF – Zahawi accepted a ministerial promotion from Boris last night and today is demanding his resignation.

I know politics is a dirty business, but ffs… at least Judas Iscariot did the honourable thing

  12. It’s very entertaining watching these cunts manoeuvre. It would be very funny if Boris just stayed on and appointed supporters from the back benches to the ministerial positions of the quitters – they could hardly do a worse job.

An election with an Asian (especially Muslim) as Tory PM would almost certainly result in a Labour landslide – a hilarious irony.

  13. Harry Haddock's Ghost

It’s entirely honourable to say, after two ministers and a couple of juniors resign, “I still back you, PM, try and style it out” then after a day’s worth of constant resignations and statements of no confidence from, what is it now, fifty odd MPs, “Nope, hasnt panned out, it’s no longer tenable, you’ll need to resign”.

  14. HHG – I don’t believe any of these honest Iagos had a Damascene conversion, looks more like a well-coordinated coup.

Compare and contrast with T. May, who was given a lot more time, support and respect even after proving to be an election-losing, compulsively dishonest fuckwit who was actively trying to sabotage our exit from the EU. What a parcel of Goves.

  15. Ahhh… Brit Politics…

It’s like watching a pack of rabid chihuahuas have a bitchfight over the right to be called Honorary Terrier while the rats fill the arena seats.

  16. “Corbyn was monstered and portrayed as some sort of Jew-hating Communist revolutionary”

Because Corbyn is a Jew-hating Communist revolutionary.

They’re talking about giving her some more time as caretaker PM.
    Maybe it’s just her talking.
