But that figure equates to just a tenth of the €2.2 million prize pot on offer in this year’s men’s Tour, despite it being three times longer than the women’s.
“If the women are racing over eight days and the men 21, then no, I don’t think it should be a 50-50 split,” said cycling activist Kathryn Bertine, who co-founded Le Tour Entier, the pressure group which pushed for the creation of La Course in 2014 and has spent years lobbying ASO to relaunch a women’s Tour.
“But it absolutely should be equal to what men are earning in those eight days. It’s insulting that they [ASO] are promoting this as the biggest prize money ever and it’s only one tenth of the men’s prize purse. Record prize money cannot be a band-aid for the fact that if it isn’t equal, it isn’t equal.”
Ms. Bertine, please do fuck off. In a market economy prices are whatever is mutually agreed. There is no fairness or equity to it.
Are women banned from entering the Tour (or any of the other cycling events)?
Also confusion about what they are being paid for. She thinks they are being paid for cycling. They are not. Anyone can cycle. Nor winning. The losing riders still get paid.
They are being paid for generating revenue for the event, their teams, and the federation, who pay the wages. Their job is revenue generation, via the spectacle of entertainment. They get a cut of the revenue they generate as entertainers. In that sense, they already are equal
Something I find particularly grating: for all the whinging about discrimination and inequality, the clearest and most obvious direct sex discrimination in existence today is Wimbledon prize money. The women get paid the same as the men for playing matches that are 2/3 or 3/5 the length. In addition the men are playing to be best at the Championships, the women are playing to be 129th best.
When it comes to tennis I only like to watch the women. Maybe that’s a thing?
Cycling tends to produce very strong thighs and also remove body fat. If that’s the shape you like the women you desire to observe in action, well, go for it.
Objectifying women again, Tim. Black mark number 697 agains you’re blog.
This years Tour de France distance is 3,328km.
Le Tour Femmes is 1,033km
So the “3 times longer” claim is fairly accurate although the ladies cycle an average of 129km per day while the men manage 158km. As far as mountains are concerned the ladies route goes nowhere near the Alps or Pyrenees, the highest peak climbed is 1,148m compared to 1,850m on the real thing.
They are both cycle races though and they’re both in France.
Beryl Burton held the cycling speed trial for two years faster than the fastest man.
In a market economy prices are whatever is mutually agreed. There is no fairness or equity to it.
I think that’s basically what she’s saying. Where you diverge is that she thinks professional sports cycling should be part of a planned political economy.
We are ruled by noisy minority pressure groups. Next thing we’ll find the bicyclists lobbying for dedicated cycle lanes.

Which they’ll largely ignore and carry on cycling in the road anyway. Two abreast. On town and A roads between 2.45pm and 6.00pm, especially on Fridays.
Which they’ll largely ignore and carry on cycling on the pavement anyway.
Along with grown men riding oversized childrens scooters.

______
I think we can take it that our host did finally get his bicycle serviced.
But no one watches the women’s portion. Its not ‘equal pay for equal effort’, its ‘you’re paid based on how much the people watching the event are willing to pay to do so’.
Hence why my local racetrack pays out shit for winning a car race but you can make a decent living *losing* at NASCAR.

As demonstrated by Danica Patrick.
Indeed, Rocco had some entertainment with one of the members of the 1976 GB Women’s Road Team in her later career…..
As Bill Burr commented recently on the WNBA being subsidised by the mens league, where are all the feminists…..
“Literally, I’m at home screaming at the fuck**g TV ‘CAUSE YOU DON’T SELL ANY FUCK**G TICKETS!!’ … Look at the WNBA, nobody in the WNBA got COVID. They have been playing in front of three to four hundred people a night for a quarter of a century. Not to mention, it’s a male-subsidized league. We gave you your fuck**g league, none of you showed up!!! You failed them, not me, not men. Ladies, name your top 5 all-time WNBA players. Name 5 WNBA teams; name the WNBA in your fuck**g city. You can’t do it!”
Are prices mutually agreed on by an exclusve set of unelected, irrationally-motivated price setters while the rest of us just have to take watever capricious prices they pull out of their lower orifices?
@jgh – “Beryl Burton held the cycling speed trial for two years faster than the fastest man.”
There’s a current world cycling record held by a woman – the record for most distance in a year. This was held by Tommy Godwin unbroken from 1939 to 2015 when Kurt Searvogel added 1,000 miles to the record. Then in 2017 Amanda Coker smashed that record by adding 10,000 more miles! She then kept cycling to beat Tommy Godwin’s other record which still stood – the time to cycle 100,000 miles (she took 432 days vs Tommy’s 500).
@Stonyground
The “women” in tennis are mostly not womenly now: Williams ‘sisters’
Plus they’re paid same as men even though they do less than 3/5ths the work and matches boring
No wonder trans exploding!
