Iconic Euro sculpture up for sale – because it’s too expensive to maintain
The giant euro sign surrounded by 12 yellow stars costs €250,000 every year just to maintain and is frequently vandalised
There’s a moral in there somewhere.

What? How?
How does it cost that much to maintain per year?
You could hire one bloke, full time, to maintain it. Turns up every morning and pressure washes any graffiti off it, makes sure the lights all work, job done.
Then just add in costs of materials and running costs of electricity for the lights.
Shouldn’t cost more than £80K, and that’s being generous.
Most of that €250,000 will be going into various back pockets. Levels of corruption in this country are vastly underestimated.
It is on the edge of a, well, edgy area (the Bahnhofsviertel), but vandalism? Come on.
In Frankfurt, the banking district is right next to the red light district (aforementioned Bahnhofsviertel). Highly appropriate seeing as in both professions you get paid to screw your clients.
Just scrap it, like the currency it represents.
I remember coming across that on a business trip to Frankfurt many years ago and thinking ‘Hubris!’. But that’s a feature of all the works of the EU. Someone there is a really big fan of Albert Speer.
It’s something I think we ought to club together to buy.* I’m sure we could display it somewhere amusing.
*Should I put in a bid at £50? Or is that too steep?
How about in the line of fire of Manneken Pis?
Frankfurt(a-M) Hbf is the only place I’ve ever nearly tripped over someone shooting up in broad daylight. I know, I lead a sheltered life.
Chris, I don’t believe you for a minute.
That you only nearly tripped over one person there shooting up in broad daylight, I mean.
What BiFR says… You must not have been paying attention.. Surprised you kept your wallet on you… 😛
Mind..It’s not as if the London Stations/Metro cattletraps are any better.. And in many ways more dangerous places to be.
EU justification to sell the Scottish Parliament too
It’s been falling down from before it opened
