If I were still there

Then this is exactly what I would be doing:

Aleksandr Gorbunov, a property investor from the Siberian city Krasnoyarsk, had a simple solution when Zara, the Spanish clothing giant, closed its stores in Russia over the invasion of Ukraine: import it himself.

“The idea to start selling Zara came from my wife, who said she really wanted the clothes to return,” said Gorbunov, who said he was opening a store called Panika (panic) on Friday that deals exclusively in Zara and Zara Home products.

Gorbunov said he quickly found a seller in Kazakhstan who dealt in Zara clothes, then imported a batch of clothing for 1.5-2 million roubles (about £23,000). He claims his markup will be just 200-300 roubles (about £3).

Well, I’d pick up seconds from the factories in Bangladesh but still, same basic idea.

In fact, if I were still there I’d be making a fortune. For sanctions do mean money making opportunities like that. Which is why sanctions work in the sense that they make things more difficult, lower living standards and so on. But they’re not the killer blow.

  1. Sanctions have not the slightest effect on the living standards of the ruling elite. After genocide they are the greatest crime against humanity.

Sanctions have not the slightest effect on the living standards of the ruling elite. After genocide they are the greatest crime against humanity.

In his autobiography FW de Klerk says he knew the game was up when business leaders came to him and said that they couldn’t continue under sanctions and the economy was going to collapse.

When I asked the ex MK/ANC leaders and fighters that I was working for on the 3rd mobile licence bid about sanctions affecting the poorest the most their attitude was that everyone had to suffer to get Apartheid removed.

Sanctions are put in place as an alternative to war. You gradually tank the economy to avoid sending in the tanks. In the list of bad things to happen to lots of people, they are not in the worst section.

  4. Anyone noticed this Gov’t & MSM blackout?

    The Surpressed Amnesty International Report:

Ukraine: Ukrainian fighting tactics endanger civilians

    — Military bases set up in residential areas including schools and hospitals

    — Attacks launched from populated civilian areas

Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm´s way by using them as human sheields as terrorists do…

Report Confirms what Steve & I have said for months – Ukraine military, like terrorists, using human shields. Now they’re using nuclear power plant as a shield

No doubt PJF will be along to attack, but provide no evidence. Maybe he’ll do a Godwin again too

  5. Personally, I wouldn’t give Amnesty any credibility whatsoever. It’s long been a political organisation with an agenda. As for Ukraine setting up military bases ” in residential areas including schools and hospitals ” Why would they bother? Russia hasn’t shown any reluctance to target “residential areas including schools and hospitals”. Or just as likely, “targeting” isn’t something the Russian military have much of a capability of doing.

  6. @bis

BS Words, words, words. Back it up with evidence

Amnesty International report is a game changer, they’ve finally exposed the truth about the “Good” Ukrainians, but MSM blackout

Russia has done all it can to protect civilians & infrastucture, good exapmle being the Azov steel works. Russia could heve used bunker buster bombs, but for months didn’t and urged Ukraine military to release their human shields and surrender. Open your eyes and look

    PH:

…Amnesty International, once revered by liberal global opinion, has made a cringing apology for a report in which it pointed out (as far as I know accurately) that Ukrainian troops had been sheltering in civilian buildings. Who really doubts it? Troops do this, even if they are not supposed to.
    .
But Amnesty now says it ‘deeply regrets the distress and anger that our press release on the Ukrainian military’s fighting tactics has caused’. This is ridiculous. If news is reduced to childish one-sided propaganda, how can the citizens of adult democracies possibly make serious decisions about which policy we should follow?

    .
…Now we have the weird episode of the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station which has been in Russian hands since they illegally seized it in March.
    .
This, whatever the provocation may be, is an extraordinarily stupid thing for anyone to do. But who is doing it? Well, since the Russian Army is dug in there, it is extremely unlikely that the Russians are doing it.
    .
So who is doing it? Martians? North Koreans? Eskimos?…
