This is the fun bit

A former US army major and his anaesthesiologist wife have been charged with plotting to leak the medical records of US military figures and their families to Russia to assist its war in Ukraine.

Jamie Lee Henry, a former major and doctor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and his wife, Dr Anna Gabrielian, were caught offering to disclose the conditions of patients at the army base during an FBI sting operation, according to an indictment unsealed on Thursday.

Dr Henry, who was reported to be the first known active-duty army officer to come out as transgender in 2015, once praised the US military for its response during a difficult transition period.

No, not that bit. This bit:

In a subsequent meeting, Dr Gabrielian told the undercover agent her husband had some reservations about providing healthcare data.

Such a disclosure would violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the indictment said.

Treason, Phooey. Breaching HIPAA? Oooooh, can’t do that…….

  1. Must confess I can’t see why the Russkies’d want this data. Though no doubt it could be a nuisance to have your data drifting around the internet.

  2. Seems like a variant of Forster’s “If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country” with patient confidentiality replacing friend.

  3. Bloke in the Fourth Reich

They won’t strike you off for treason.

Only for breaching HIPAA. Or suggesting that 7 month old babies don’t need a covid shot every 3 months.

  4. . . . to Russia to assist its war in Ukraine.

An addition to the internet picture meme of the superhero wiping his sweaty brow over which button to press – the protagonist can be named “conservative conspiracy nut” and the buttons labelled:

    [ another mentally ill trans wanker ] – – – – – [ helping Russia against the Ukinazis ]

“The FBI indictment uses male pronouns based on the information they have regarding how Dr Henry refers to himself.”
    Phew!

  6. Self-selection.

The feds are trolling for would-be Russian spies, and the kind of people who are likely to fall for this kind of thing are likely to be dumb.

Kind of like with their domestic “terrorism” stings, that always end up with mentally ill loners being encouraged by federal agents to stockpile illegal guns and whatnot.

  7. It almost certainly isn’t treason. The Founding Fathers were familiar with the history of English treason, its abuse, and the 14th Century attempts to curtail it. They cared enough to define it in the Constitution.

The US definition is extremely strict and essentially requires open war or aiding enemies engaged in open war while “adhering to” said enemy. There’s not much case law so there’s room to twist the interpretation, but even then there’s a bunch of requirements re: witnesses etc.

These two have been charged with “wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information” and conspiracy (I’m unsure whether this is an inchoate version of disclosure or the offence of conspiracy against the US). They have not been charged with treason.

  8. The HIPPA but makes this sound like another FBI-manufactured crime. Where they go out and pressure people until they find something to arrest them on.

I’d bet that the next we hear of it, it will be the case falling apart because 3/4 of the conspirators were working for the FBI.

  9. It is also interesting that even Fox News tiptoed around his pronouns. Using only “husband” in the article. The concept of trans was studiously avoided.

  10. “The Founding Fathers … cared enough to define it in the Constitution”: being a bunch of traitors themselves they would naturally be careful with their definitions.

  11. So yet another Murkan tale of derring do in espionage battling weevil Putler.
Unfortunately there are no actual real Russians in the whole sorry tale.
Makes one wonder if there are any actual Russians involved in the many other tales we hear or just various western 3 letter agencies doing spy vs spy on each other & their own citizens
