I wonder…..

Spain passes law to bring ‘justice’ to Franco-era victims
Measures include creation of census and national DNA bank to help locate and identify remains

They going to make the same effort about those killed by Stalin’s goons?

It does say “victims of the civil war”. So that’ll be those mass graves that turn up which both sides used to dispose of their victims. I suppose they could just dig up the ones dug by the Francoists. If they want to start another civil war here. Memories are long & bitter

I notice that there is no mention at all of those killed by the Republic. Or of those whose goods and properties were seized by the Republicans.

Indeed there’s no mention at all of reparations being demanded from Russia for example.

But no doubt reparations will be vehemently demanded from the beastly Brits for failure to blockade Spain, and send troops to make sure the Republicans remained in power. Perhaps they’ll insist that the Russkies should also get a healthy handful of British gold to compensate them for the UK’s failure to carry out Stalin’s policy for him.

Pretty sure the ‘victims’ of Caudillo Franco already received justice. If they didn’t like it, they shouldn’t have been Communists ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Boganboy
It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Spain demanded compensation for the damage done to the walls of Badajoz.
The history of the Spanish military is an interesting one. In the period following the Peninsular War ( in which they specialised in running away) the Spanish have participated in 3 European wars, in all of which they fought themselves & lost. S. America was of course a long series of defeats. Getting their arses handed to them on a plate by the Brigade Britanico in Colombia being a particularly impressive one. But they do tend to go in for atrocities.

They can be quite amusing. There’s a parade every year goes past beneath this apartment has a contingent of them. That strange march step & geezer at the front throwing his stick high in the air & mostly catching it. There’s military music as well. (He says, shuddering) Then they indulge in something I can only describe as formation pass-the-rifle. I wonder what that owes its roots to? “No I don’t want the bloody thing, Miguel. Somebody might shoot at me”? Personally, I keep well back in case one of the silly buggers has left one up the spout.

‘ They going to make the same effort about those killed by Stalin’s goons?’

Or those victims of the Communists and International Brigades?

@PJF: it’s as transparent as calling the Germans “Anglo-Saxons”.

Get with the program – Communists don’t have any victims. Anyone who says otherwise is a Nazi…

Long ago, in The War, one of my father’s men casually murdered some German prisoners. He was from a Spanish Republican family that had moved to England.
