These people are entirely, completely, fucking mad

Is this the worst time in American history to be a mom?

The answer is no, obviously.

Throughout my pregnancy, I found my mind wandering to thoughts of what motherhood must have been like for earlier generations of Americans — when it seemed easier, or at least was portrayed that way. Certainly, my mother, and my mother’s mother, raised children in an era when income inequality was less stark, when the middle class still existed, when our planet was less polluted — even if gender equality was in a less developed state than it is now.

Fucking mad. Complete fucking loons.

  1. The entire article confirms the continued existence of a certain section of the middle class. Where would Salon be without it?

  2. Death in childbirth, puerperal fever, sepsis, unstitched vaginal/anal tears, cholera, no disposable nappies. Yes the old days were innocent and full of joy.
I’m not generally in favour of abortion but there are always exceptions. Thirty years later if needs be.

  3. She would rather that the poor be poorer so long as the rich were less rich but by a greater amount. Or something like that what Thatcher said.

  4. Current western civilization favours single women over married, so while it’s not the worst time to be a mum, it’s not the best either. That would have been the time when we had all the medical advantages but before the social disadvantages, late sixties early seventies? Somewhere around there.

  5. I had occasion while in the US to drive beside both the Santa Fe trail and the Mormon trail. People, mums, kids and all, walked those trails for thousands of miles beside wagons containing all their possessions. I thought the drive was a little tedious. I can’t imagine how those people did it.

  6. @Bongo

Yes, that’s envy – condemned as very harmful for thousands of years.

Not sure what Thatcher said about it, but I doubt it was complimentary.
