Not even pretending now

As Donald Trump inches closer to launching another presidential run after the midterm election, Justice Department officials have discussed whether a Trump candidacy would create the need for a special counsel to oversee two sprawling federal investigations related to the former president, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

Good grief.

  1. But I thought that the screaming was all about the wickedness of NOT accepting that you’d lost???

Oh!!! That only applies when Trump lost!!!!!

  2. What’s your point, Tim? The investigations exist and will be ongoing. If DT runs, the DoJ shouldn’t have control over the investigations, so they appoint a special counsel to give them independence. I know it doesn’t fit the conspiracy theories, but they’re just doing their job and trying NOT to f up the politics.

  3. “The investigations exist and will be ongoing”

Yeah but why? Why do they never finish? How long does it take to decide whether the recovered material was legally held or not? Seems like the kind of thing that could be done in an afternoon. Unless of course by any chance the process is the punishment. See also Jan 6 prisoners.

  4. Rhoda – Never mind, I’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of Jeffrey Epstein’s mysterious web of financial and personal arrangements, any day now.

    “Investigations are ongoing”, no doubt.

  5. They are also no longer pretending over the issue of election fraud. It cannot occur, so any complaints before the fact are malicious whereas any after are denial and without legal standing.

  6. No one really cares that Trump is being “investigated” except the people who already hate him anyway. Outside of media figures, Hollywood celebrities and campaign volunteers, no one even knows these investigations are going on.

I say let the DOJ keep themselves occupied. It’ll be just another unsuccessful venture, and it’ll keep them from investigating ordinary citizens.

  7. “They are also no longer pretending over the issue of election fraud. It cannot occur …”

… but Democrats must be on constant guard against it. Doublethink like that must be physically painful.

  8. I’m no particular fan of Trump, but surely if there was some serious malfeasance on his part the DoJ would have found something that stuck to him by now. He’s got to be the most investigated president in history and has even been charged with anything?

  9. If I were a Republican I think I’d prefer De Santis, and I think he (being younger, far brighter and more articulate, and with a track record of opposing the Covid and woke terrors) would be more popular with voters. The Dem/Big State obsession with Trump is maniacal.

If The Donald had less of an ego I could be persuaded that he’s currently running a human shield operation to keep the deep state swamp’s attention off De Santis; and at the beginning of primary season he’ll announce that he’s decided that age has unfortunately caught up with him but fully endorses De Santis for the R nomination.

But in reality I expect he’ll be going for it himself.

It is indeed, yet were De Santis (or anyone else of a similar ilk) to be elected then the full ire of the Deep State would immediately be turned on them instead. Never forget that John McCain (most latterly described by usual suspects as ‘the good Republican’ for his use to them as an anti-Trump weapon) was also demonised as the next Hitler when he stood for President against Obama. Anyone who opposes the Left and the Deep State will get it in the neck, regardless of whether they are a ‘clean skin’ or not.

In many ways it would be better to let Trump do it in 2024, he’s been inoculated against the attacks, and everyone can see how he’s been treated. De Santis/AN Others would have to face new concocted scandals and do the hard yards of disproving them from scratch, to the detriment of actually being able to do anything, which of course is the whole point of such activity in the first place. Trump can just say ‘They’re out to get me, they’ve lied about me from day one, this is more of the same’ and shrug it all off, and people will accept that and still vote for him. De Santis would have to fight to maintain his ‘clean’ character status, Trump’s has been muddied so often it no longer matters. When fighting in a sewer some previous experience is probably an advantage.
