This is not, in fact, true

It’s all but impossible to make a living doing any kind of freelance writing these days, and unless he’s either exceptionally frugal or exceptionally prolific, my guess is that he’s struggling as much as any of us.

Freelancing on just the stuff you like doing, sure, that’s difficult. But it’s entirely possible to make a good living freelancing. It’s just that, in common with near all other types of paid labor, you’ve got to go out and do what other people want done.

  1. It’s just that, in common with near all other types of paid labor, you’ve got to go out and do what other people want done.

    Ditto entrepreneurship.

  2. She’s making this complaint via Substack, a platform where lots of freelance writers make decent wedge, I understand…

This is from the top comment on her article: “ I’m the daughter of a working-class immigrant (my dad was a line cook in a diner) and the first in my family to go to a four-year college. I thought majoring in the arts was the ticket to a middle-class creative working life” – I feel bad for laughing, and for her parents.

  3. Alternative theory: she’s trying to discourage others, in order to limit competition. Seems like the kind of strategy a woman would employ.

  4. “I thought majoring in the arts was the ticket to a middle-class creative working life”

Who told her that? She should sue.

  5. “I thought majoring in the arts was the ticket to a middle-class creative working life”

This is perhaps some of the worst life/career advice ever given. That said, freelance anything can work out for an individual with enough contacts, portfolio of work and ability to promote themselves.

Alternatively, do a different job and treat the freelance stuff as a sideline until it builds up enough income to replace the regular job.
