Err, yes, and?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have accused Jeremy Clarkson of apologising “solely” to Prince Harry over his newspaper column about Meghan.

The couple issued a statement after the television presenter announced that he had sent an email to both the Duke and Duchess on Christmas Day to apologise for his “disgraceful” words.

It came as it emerged that Clarkson is “likely” to be dropped by Amazon, after he admitted that the streaming service was “incandescent” over the column.

A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said on Monday: “On Dec 25 2022, Mr Clarkson wrote solely to Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. The contents of his correspondence were marked private and confidential.

“While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long-standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny.

So, hate rhetoric and misogyny then. Assume that it is correct – it ain’t, but assume so – and then what?

We still get to say bugger off, don’t we? Because the virtues of free speech trump all those things about taste and the desire not to be offended. Some chap does indeed have the right – right, note – to say things you would prefer he doesn’t say. The limitations are incitement to immediate violence and libel. That what he’s said pisses off a Duchess, even a Royal one, is just that tough tittie time.

Be gone, foul fiends. For we’ll let you take our palaces and our spares, but not our freedoms.

  1. If something unfortunate happens to the main part it’s generally bad even with a spare to take its place. If something bad (like Megan) happens to the “spare” it’s a case of …… ummm does it actually matter, especially when you have other better spares.

  2. Clarkson’s own fault.

Never ever apologise. It is a sign of weakness and means that there is blood in the water.

This is doubly so when dealing with a fish as downright nasty as the Great Meghanolodon.

  3. That what he’s said pisses off a Duchess, even a Royal one, is just that tough tittie time.

Easy to imagine Megs raging at Clarkson and siccing her ginger sidekick on the guy, but it’s also easy to imagine this being Harry’s idea.

He seems thick enough and chippy enough, and let’s be honest: Harry knew exactly what type of whore to marry in order to piss off Willy and Pa.

  4. I feel sorry for the poor bloke.

Obviously, a bit ga-ga and then trapped by a 10th rate actress who is 1st rate street smart.

He’s alienated his family and when she divorces him for his alleged physical and mental cruelty, as she surely will, he will have no direction home.

  5. Jez should’ve known that apologising is just seen by leftists as weakness that’s a signal to go on the attack.
He should now publicly tell both of them to f**k off.

  6. Grist – seems like he wanted to alienate his family. It’s easy and correct to blame the mad slapper, but Harry married her of his own free will and in the full knowledge that everybody in his family thought it a bad idea.

His ridiculous book/crying tour is all on Harry. You don’t go to out of your way, as he has, to humiliate your relatives unless you really, really hate them.

Seems like he has always been a mischievous and stupid boy with a massive sense of entitlement on account of the silver spoon up his royal bum. Most of us were little bastards as children – but Harry never emotionally developed past childhood, and now he’s nearly 40 and telling strangers about his preferred brand of penis cream, for attention and money.

Harry and Meghan deserve each other.

Don’t just apologise. Show the world that you are our bitch now, by changing your entire entertainment schtick by which you earn a living, and publicly cleansing your character.

Ottokring is right. An apology will never be enough. I was hoping that Clarkson’s original semi-apology was ironic, but it appears the poor man is actually frightened.

To see how this works on a national or church scale, see under “Reparations”.

  8. As Clarkson’s media career is now over maybe he will finally relocate his spine and give politics a go, the Reform Party obviously.

A podcast might have done well were it not for the fact that pretty much every platform would now to pressure and refuse to host it.

“Never apologise never explain” is the new “Go woke go broke”.

  9. What did Amazon expect? They hired a loose cannon, whose star appeal is in no small part due to his skirting the rules and ruffling of feathers. Amazon’s response should be to wait until the whole thing blows over (and it already had) then carry on as usual.

  10. Andrew

The permanently offended parties, aided by our clickbait driven UK media who’ve always had it in for Clarkson, were never going to let this one blow over.

  11. It’s probably wishful thinking, but I’d like it if Clarkson and Amazon are simply playing a publicity game on H&M’s publicity game. They must know the popularity numbers do not favour the Sussexeses. More likely Amazon is using this to get out of an expensive contract with Clarko, plus book sales.

  12. A surprising number of people have predicted that this saga will come to an end when Meghan does the decent thing and divorces Harry. I don’t see that happening, at least as things stand at the moment. There is no stronger solvent in a marriage than shared grievances, and these two have them in spades. The “adversity” they “suffer” has bonded them together in an “us against the world” fashion; deadly stuff for anyone on the receiving end. Only if their interests diverge will the fur start to fly (such as, for example, when Rose West sold Fred down the river once they were both finally in chokey), but as long as Harry loyally trails Meghan like a faithful pet that isn’t going to happen.

  13. CJA – I think it depends on their media “career”. They’re getting loads of attention now, but most of it is bad attention.

Once the novelty of Harry’s autohumiliation wears off – and signs are the Yanks are already starting to tire of their schtick – I don’t think Netflix and co. will be lining up to do any more expensive docudramas or prime time exclusive interviews with them. Given their incredibly expensive lifestyle and even more incredible petulance, that will hurt.

They’re the kind of people who unironically talk about “personal brands”, but they’ve made their own personal brand into “trashy reality TV style skank drama”. That’s a crowded market and there’s plenty of whores and simps ready to embarrass themselves in front of the camera. Meghan also seems ruthlessly transactional in her family relationships and always ready to throw loved ones under a bus when they’re no longer useful. Harry better watch out for when she suddenly “remembers” that he, too, is “problematic”.

  14. Parliament really ought to pass a new act governing the succession just in case Willie and his nippers are bumped off. They could delete Harry from the list and might as well do the same for Andrew. Presumably the deletion would include their offspring. That would leave Edward and offspring, and Anne and offspring. They should be insurance enough.

Maybe we could look forward to King Consort Mike Tindall, eh?

  15. One of the drivers for press freedom and freedom of speech was the right to criticise and make fun of the monarchy and other ruling elite, we seem to be backtracking at the moment

  16. telling strangers about his preferred brand of penis cream, for attention and money

It’s worse than that, he tells us who he was thinking about when he applied it. There’s ishoos and then there’s …

  17. “what remains to be addressed is his long-standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny”

Seems potentially libellous to me. Would be fun to see that tested.
