Timed to go to the toilet. Told off for leaning. Monitored for each package completed. As a worker at Amazon, I often feel that we aren’t being treated as people.
But for me, the moment I knew we needed to go on strike was when we were told we’d be getting a pay rise of just 50p extra an hour. We came into work one day and the managers were holding briefings – telling us that this was all we were going to get, and that we shouldn’t expect anything better. Just 50p extra, when we’re facing rising prices in every shop and energy bills going through the roof. The company describes the offer as “competitive pay”, pointing out that we get employee benefits on top of the hourly wage. Yet the company is making millions – if not billions – for the people at the top.
Hmm.
Net loss was $2.7 billion in 2022
According to the left profit is irrelevant. Revenue is the important one. Hence if a company is turning over billions then it has billions that can be taxed.
I think amazon are great. They sell me stuff without taking anything as vulgar as a profit (and sometimes without even a margin).
See also gopuff, uber, etc etc. If those diabolical venture capitalists in California want to subsidise my lifestyle then I’m a devil worshipper.
Of course, they think that having cornered the market they can then raise prices. But meanwhile it looks like they lose money on every transaction but hope to make it up on volume.
“just to make ends meet” That’s why most people work, you bloody fool.
Maybe they should learn to code
Having worked with a couple of people who could make going ouside for a fag last fifteen minutes followed by brewing a tea or coffee in the ‘break out area’ and therefore away from the desk for thirty minutes 6 or 7 times a day, some people do need monitoring.
Always amused by how often people argue that they should be paid more bc the company is making a lot of money or bc of inflation or the cost of living.
How about you get paid based on your market value?

It’s a grim, harsh world but that’s about the size of it. If you’re in a shitty job that doesn’t, and won’t, pay well, the answer is to seek employment somewhere less shitty that pays better. If you can’t find such a job, then you know what (in this context) you are worth.
PJF,

People who call for more strikes don’t get this. Striking in the past was because people lacked mobility. So you went on strike for more pay because it was hard to work elsewhere. Once cars became a big thing, people could change employers more easily and unions weren’t necessary.
And the problem for this guy is that Amazon pay well for the work. When they opened the warehouse in Swindon they caused a lot of problems for other distribution centres as people quit them to work at Amazon.
I suspect this bloke is just a series of bad decisions. 57, working at Amazon? But look at him… talking them down publicly, complaining about toilet breaks and how much work they have to do. I’ve met people like this. They perform a bog average job, don’t get given opportunities, and if redundancies come they’re in the first group to go.
Time to lean = time to clean
When they opened the warehouse in Swindon they caused a lot of problems for other distribution centres as people quit them to work at Amazon.
Yup, that’s the other aspect – all these people voluntarily signed up to work for these arrangements. The arrangements are being improved but are no longer acceptable?
Piss off mate, don’t like it then leave. And it always makes me laugh when these idiots say oh-but-your-making-billions. Even if that’s true, so what? And do you know what it took to get the company to that stage? Why don’t you start your own?
That said I’m surprised that the hero of the masses, professor potato, isn’t standing up for the rights of workers to lean when they want and take a leisurely dump with the crossword (4 days a week)
Just have a shit before you come to work. It’s not difficult
“ don’t like it then leave”
Weren’t you the crowd who all pissed themselves about their employers telling them to wear masks at work? How many of you left?
