Action must be taken against pornography to help end the “epidemic” of male violence against women and girls, according to a cross-party group of MPs.
A substantial proportion of mainstream pornography features physically aggressive behaviour by men against women, says a report by the group. The MPs say there is extensive evidence that consuming pornography fuels sexual violence and influences viewers’ behaviour, or “sexual scripts”, as well as perpetuating racist stereotypes.
No, the evidence runs the other way. Porn is a substitute for, not a complement to, sexual violence.
This is well known, proven even. The causation seems to be that those who have tossed themselves in a stupor don’t go out and attack people.
Therefore to reduce sexual violence – a good thing to my mind – we need more porn, not less.
How unlike our politicians to get exactly the wrong end of the stick here.
MPs urge crackdown on pornography to tackle violence against women
Violence against women caused by the government paying foreign rapists to move to your town is OK tho.
It is a rather odd interpretation. The most popular bit pr0n of late was Shades of Grey both book & film. Popular almost entirely with the female market. (Don’t think I’ve ever heard of a guy managing to finish reading it.) And that sparked an interest in the purchase of all sorts of “apparatus”. Sex toy seller web sites are full of it. So, sure, pr0n has encouraged male violence against women. Warmly welcomed by the women. Revealed preferences, no?
And I do know on the sexworker market there’s about a 10 to 1 ratio favouring dominatrices against submissives (female). So female violence against men’s pretty popular. Although one wonders if dominant males are getting their kicks gratis (see above), so distorting the figures.
Also an odd interpretation by the people doing the interpreting. We’ve all too regularly learned what MPs get up to in their spare time. And their revealed preferences don’t seem to support their own argument.
It’s not just “going out and attacking people.” You are ignoring the existence of sexual violence (choking and so on) within relationships. There is some evidence that viewing porn leads to it being seen as the norm, especially by young men. The same is true of anal sex, which is not as easy and painless for women as porn makes it look.
Chris, given the prevalence of ex-public schoolboys among our MPs I sure they’re familiar with the realities of “potting the brown”, as we snooker porn addicts say…
Action must be taken against [something or other] according to a cross-party group of MPs.
The MPs say there is extensive [selective] evidence [against whatever it is they don’t like].
Whatever it is they don’t like will be banned or regulated. It will have no impact on anything.
In the context of the post, Steve, you’re suggesting forrin rapists are drawn to your shores by feverish viewing of pornhub in their former countries of residence? It’s always possible I s’pose.
Ah, but taking matters into your own hands (known as self abuse in earlier generations) is wrong because… I’ve no idea. Some holdover from religious indoctrination perhaps?
The plebs were needed to breed to produce more workers and religions wanted to own the marriage/family/funeral process?
I remember a schoolfriend. He’d invited a girl to his bedroom and to his surprise she said yes, he’d thought he’d try it on and to his surprised she was all for it. Then when the deed was being done she started shouting “Invade me!”, “Ravish me!”, which very much was a distraction to his mind, plus his parents might hear. I mean he carried on but discussing it afterwards with us guys we all wondered where the hell that came from. Unlikely to be porn because just wasn’t available, our collective guess at the time was mills and boon.
Steve
It’s early in Russia of course but I always marvel at your ability to get to the top of a thread – maybe the Wagner group network has ‘early warning filters’ attuned to Tim’s blog.
Comment is as ever spot on.

I’ve found that when a group of female MPs especially, even more so when that group is cross party, gets together to try and ban something you can be sure the net impact is likely to be the exact opposite of what they intend. The quality of people involved in the political process has deteriorated to such a degree that I am almost thinking we might have to start repealing the Representation of the people’s acts further back than the 20th century…
Still a better reaction than when they suddenly burst into laughter, then calm down and politely say thank you, what would you like to do next?
Neither Mayfair nor Mills & Boon prepared me for that one.
It always seemed weird to me that a country full of prudes (America) has the largest porn industry on the planet.
Anyway – personal anecdote – after Covid got into full swing, our company got several large orders (fnarr) to manufacture male chastity devices.
Apparently all these people on furlough or ‘working from home’ were making the most of their time.
Maybe it was frustration that may have added to the sum of male violence against women?
Strangely enough, the British have always produced the best spanking/paddling/caning porn.
Or at least that’s what I’m told…
Bloke in Brum,
“It always seemed weird to me that a country full of prudes (America) has the largest porn industry on the planet.”
It’s a lot about it being a spin-off from Hollywood. You had people who had come to LA to work as actresses or technicians, struggled to work, so did some porn to pay the bills. Like the director of Men in Black started out shooting porn.
It’s one of the reasons that 70s porn looks so good. Because there was a lot more technical to filming things, you had to hire film guys, who also knew about lighting, framing, editing.
Chris,

“Some evidence”. There’s anecdotes about this, mostly from anti-porn people, who will look for every angle to ban porn. There’s no evidence, though.
I’m not saying that some men don’t do it, but to what extent? Most men I think know that porn is a fantasy. Anyone who has had a few trips to the hospital knows that they don’t get blown by a big titted nurse.
As for anal sex, it’s mostly just the new taboo.
BonM4, I read some survey results about this just a couple of days ago, but I can’t remember where, no doubt thanks to all that self-abuse in my younger days. I can’t be arsed (fnarr fnarr) to look for them. Yes, I do know that surveys based on self-reported results need caution. But even if it may not be very good, there’s not “no evidence.”
@Chris There’s also no evidence that fullfills the cause/effect conundrum requirement..
Except you reading some survey results somewhere you can’t/won’t replicate/link here. That’s…. positively Tuberous..
There’s the assumption here that women have no agency.
Plenty of women enjoy porn, and have their own fetishes.
There are lots of women who get a thrill from being tied up, and/or choked/spanked whatever.
Then there are those for whom being with a typical ‘bad boy’ who treats them like dirt is like a magnetic attraction.
cf. all those violent Crims in prison who get heaps of fan-mail from women lusting after them.
