The latest Grocer 33, in which the trade magazine looks at 33 best-selling food and drink products, shows that the biggest annual hike has been for Mr Kipling Angel Slices.
This time last year, an eight pack of the cakes was as little as £1.42 as Asda but now costs £3.50 – a rise of 146 per cent. Sainsbury’s now charges £3.45 for a pack, 138 per cent more than the £1.45 it was charging 12
Were they at a special promotional price that year ago?
When did those goods become staples?
Will this mean fewer fatties waddling around the supermarket and more fatties in the queue for Greg’s?
OT, but I like this: protein wisdom reborn! | A Re-Declaration of Independence
BinD….. “When did that stuff become food?” is the actual question…
@BiND
It never ceases to surprise me what people consider as essentials. I think it was the Torygraph did a column on which was the best crepe mix pre Pancake Day. FFS! Egg, flour milk/water to choice, pinch of salt. WTF would anyone buy crepe mix?
And one thing I took away from living in France was pommes lisse (Cadbury’s Smash to you lot) + hot water + packet bread crumbs = potato croquettes. It’s quicker than opening the packet & a fraction of the price. And it’s always there occupying trivial space in the larder rather than considerable space in both the shopping bag & freezer.

The local Co op had a box of 6 Angel Slices for £1.50 today. I didn’t buy any.

Should have popped to Aldi. £1.05 for 6 there, and they look identical to the expensive ones. Probably made on the same production line too.
You buy pancake or waffle mix if you are the type of person that doesn’t usually have flour in the pantry, which is a lot of people, best just to think of it as specially labelled flour for people who can’t remember (or don’t know) about ingredients

The ‘Grocer 33’ is a random old selection; If it’s at all representative of the British diet we’re all in trouble.
I was looking at inflation broken down by category and most of the low inflation items pulling the overall rate down were discretionary items like clothing and entertainment, food inflation is still running at around double digits. I’ve started to notice people are seeing the disconnect between the headline figure and their daily/weekly spending
@PJF
Pommes lisse from E-LeClerk worked out about half the price of fresh spuds for mash making & aren’t growing roots or rotten when you need them. I’m not a purest when it comes to food ingredients.
You leave your potatoes long enough for them to sprout???? What are you doing, buying them by the hundredweight as a single person?
Thank you BiS for the crocket recipe.

The one advantage of your northern climbs. In the south, spuds have a very short shelf life.
Dunno why that is, apart from the temperature. Maybe it’s the varieties will grow down here. You get around a week after you’ve bought them. Same in PT, Tim?
Bis. A week at most
We tend to buy sweet potato & yuca/manioca. Lasts better. Fair substitutes for a lot of things
Yes, a week is pushing it here.
