I am reluctant to use the term public intellectual of myself, but others do. I recognise the possibility that it is true. I also recognise why so many avoid the role. It is not easy.

Jeez, and thus with another comparison to himself and the Nazis.

You are abused. If you refuse to compromise with those who disagree with you or seek to enlist your support then that abuse grows in magnitude. Staying true to your principles undoubtedly costs you relationships with those you once thought of as friends. And throughout it all you have to continually question and doubt yourself just in case others are right, after all. Admitting to the possibility that you might be wrong is an essential part of the role. Doing so continually has a mental cost, as I know.

He’s admitted he’s wrong when?

  1. There’s probably some long Latin name for the condition of people who revel in being despised.

  2. With characteristic and spectacular brass neck, the totally un self-aware Potato states:

“I admit that I am not good at embracing intolerance. I won’t do so. But I make no pretence that doing so is easy. It exposes you continually to the accusation that you are the one being intolerant. But then, Goebbels did always say that the art of propaganda was to accuse your opponent of that of which you are guilty.”

    What friends? What principles?

  4. I see the Corporate Accountability Network has filed accounts at Companies House showing Murphy got a £30k salary from them in 2022. Plus he gets £35k from the Polden Puckham trust, a one day a week professor salary from Sheffield plus money from articles, books, etc. At least £80k a year and he is asking his readers to buy him a coffee!

  5. The great BF beat me to the punch but this is just hysterical

The idea that someone who is as close to pure evil as you are likely to encounter in Cyberspace is an exemplar of tolerance confirms his complete departure from reality. He wouldn’t know Karl Popper from
    Karl Marx Stadt.

  6. Hahahaha. I was getting bored of the great potato. Just the same old incoherent drivel. Far too easy to laugh at him, I’d moved on to laughing at fat women falling over instead (treat yourself on YouTube)

But this? He recognises that he may be a public intellectual?? Fuck me. He’s not even public outside his wank circle. As for intellectual – the fat women falling over are smarter

  7. Intellectual? The man is delusional. No one is calling him an intellectual. Yes, people are indeed calling him things, but intellectual isn’t one of them.

  8. I do not agree with some of the commenters about the Potato not being an intellectual.

He is. Considering the modern use of the term by people who are actually intelligent.

  9. When I was young it was fashionable to be “an intellectual” and there were scores* of young people who liked to think of themselves as “intellectual” putting on airs and talking in an “intellectual” fashion, frequently without understanding what they were talking about. We used to describe them as “pseudo-intellectuals” and call them “psueds” as they only deserved one syllable not seven. Murphy is a pseud, possibly a “public pseud” – I don’t remember that phrase because it may not have existd prior to social media.
*scores at least – one might extrapolate from those I knew to say tens of thousands in the UK alone

  10. “There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.”
    ― George Orwell

He does have some absurd ideas, so maybe he is correct in his self description.
