This isn’t going to work

The year before Prof Mortensen was elected to the top job in surgery, the BMA was hit by a #MeToo movement, with female doctors accusing senior members of the union of sending unsolicited naked pictures and joking about women’s bra sizes amid a culture of “institutional sexism”.

Women on the BMA’s committee said they had been called “naughty girls” and other belittling names, describing incidents in which senior women had been groped and sexually propositioned.

Groping is bad, trying to belittle female because female is bad. But trying to take sex out of human interactions simply isn’t going to work. On the grounds that humans are sexual beings.

Tits is an even more of an issue. Among apes only humans have tits. It’s one of the defining features of the species. They exist purely for human males to ponder. Insisting they don’t is one of those things that just isn’t going to work among humans.

Yes, of course capability as a surgeon is not determined by them, nor should it be. But attempting to create a world in which they are disregarded is simply a world that will never happen.

  1. This perpetual Me Too rubbish persuades me of the urgent need for lots and lots of ‘men only’ spaces. Clearly men simply cannot do their work if they’re harassed and distracted by women.

    How about say, the workplace.
