Thought I hadn’t seen it

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting that killed four young people at a Sweet Sixteen birthday party,….The birthday girl’s brother, 18-year-old Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell of Camp Hill, died in his sister’s arms. He and another victim, 17-year-old Shaunkivia Nicole “KeKe” Smith of Dadeville, were high school seniors. Families were left planning funerals instead of graduation celebrations. Also killed were Marsiah Emmanuel “Siah” Collins, 19, of Opelika and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23, of Dadeville.

the pair — Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, both of Tuskegee — would be tried as adults.

Yeah, that’s the bit I’ve not seen. Someone blaming this on white oppression and racism.

  1. I’m not sure we’ve ever had a global hegemon suffer a collective nervous breakdown and piss itself in public the way the USA has. Rome, Spain and our own dear Empire declined with some degree of dignity, while the US resembles a shit show at the fuck factory.

Closer to home, what happened to the Brianna Ghey case? Strange how little we still know about that one.

  2. Always go by the protocol:

    1. Only mention the race or ethnicity if the perpetrator is white.

    2. Only mention the religion if the perpetrator is a Christian.

    3. If the perpetrator is white, it’s either a hate crime or domestic terrorism caused by Trump. If the perpetrator isn’t white, then too many guns are the problem, or you can somehow link it to white supremacy or climate change. Anything other than the perp’s own malevolence.

    4. If the perpetrator isn’t white, you can wait as long as you want to disclose the motive or any manifesto that may shed light on the motive.

    5. If the perpetrator is white, recent and—if possible—nefarious-looking photographs are to be used by the press. If the perpetrator isn’t white, be sure to only publicize photographs of the perp as a cute, young child.

    6. If the perpetrator is white, give them life in prison without parole or the death penalty. If the perpetrator isn’t white, give them perhaps 20-30 years and 3 years of probation. After all, they were just about to turn their life around before this minor inconvenience.

    7. Even if a handgun was used in the commission of the crime, the first order of business is banning “assault weapons,” even though our government to come up with a definition for this term.

    8. If the perpetrator is white, look for any mitigating factors you can find, even ones that aren’t there. If the perp isn’t white, hide the fact that they were armed or becoming armed by grabbing someone else’s weapon. Hide anything that puts the perp in a negative light, like criminal history or sex offender status. Even if the perp was holding a gun to a victim’s throat, the cops still could’ve used a taser or shot him in the leg. No need for excessive violence when dealing with a murderer.

    9. If the perpetrator is a woman, LGBTQ, or Muslim, they may be given even more leniency. If the perp is simply disabled, an immigrant or Jewish, the sympathy could go either way, depending on how convenient they are to the media’s narrative and incentives.

  3. If this was a “Sweet Sixteen shooting”, then either someone can’t count, or they are a poor shot.

  4. @ Sam Vara
The birthday girl’s elder brother put himself between her and the gun (mentioned in first report of the incident).

  5. So one becomes an adult at 16 in that state then? Presumably with all other adult rights, voting, buying smokes, gambling, etc.

  6. @jgh

Well, you’d think justice would require that, but the ages are 18 (voting), 21 (tobacco – used yo be 19 before federal law in 2021), 19 (gambling). Also 18 to buy (or possess except in very narrow circumstances) a gun, or 21 if it is a handgun.

So the “as an adult” is just malice.

  7. I do like the Swiss system where parents can only choose names for their children from a list. Which have been in a book.
I appreciate parental rights would be eroded by such a law but it’s getting ridiculous, giving kids place names and all. ‘s-Hertegenbosch Smith III will be christened this year in all likelihood.

  8. It is possible for perpetrators that are under age to be tried as adults for certain crimes such as murder, in both the USA and Canada.
This came about because of reform on treatment of underage crimes. Basically if you are tried as under age you cannot be held beyond the time when you become an adult and your record gets sealed (and possibly expunged – this may vary).

The law has to accommodate both a one-time 12 year old thief and a 17 year old multiple murderer. It does a bad job, but well that’s the law for you.

  9. Re: black American names. Do their parents honestly want them to be unemployable?

Re: photos, it always amuses me when reports of aspiring rappers and DJs mysteriously stabbed in drug gang shenanigans don’t have time to get one from the victim’s mum. So instead of him looking angelic aged 12, we get a recent social media photo of him looking like a right wrong’un.

  10. “Alexis Dowdell’s birthday party was being held at a dance studio just off the town square. Witnesses said multiple people began shooting some time after her mother paused the celebration to ask people with guns to leave.”

  11. 1. Only mention the race or ethnicity if the perpetrator is white.

The problem is, with names like Shequanelle Travayron Johnson, you don’t exactly need Wilhelm Frick’s Racial Guide to help us on our way. The only one’s given such ridiculous names are African-Americans.
