Nope. Fuck off.

Ministers should confiscate the mansions, country estates and UK assets of Russian oligarchs to help pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a senior adviser in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office said this weekend.

Confiscating the assets of enemeies of the people, eh?

No.

Fuck off.

End of.

  1. First they came for the oligarchs, then they came for the Jews, then they came for the Christians, then they came for the whites, and then they came for me.

    No!! Fuck ’em.

  2. He said Russia should pay the hundreds of billions of dollars needed for reconstruction, rather than taxpayers in western countries.

    Counteroffensive going well then?

Steiner’s division about to break through Russki lines, any day now, Mein Ukler?

Another cringey “shhh!” video about to drop when Ukraine gets its next tranche of disposable wunderwaffen?

The estimated cost of reconstruction and recovery in Ukraine is now more than $400bn, with the costs on a similar scale to the Marshall plan, the US-sponsored programme to support the economic recovery of Europe after the second world war.

Remember: this is a war we, and Ukraine, are said to be winning. Imagine how badly damaged Ukraine would be if they/we were losing!*

Vladyslav Vlasiuk, a sanctions expert working in the presidential office, said Ukraine’s government would like the UK to follow Canada in implementing new regulations that allow authorities to seize and redistribute assets

Canada: the Mordor of Mandatory Global Homosexuality.

“This is not just about the war in Ukraine, it is about the world order. If there is a state which thinks it can do want it wants, it has to be punished. It has to be a lesson for other countries.”

He’s saying this to the largest state sponsors of terrorism in the world (Uncle Sam and his Friendly Friends).

The Observer understands that Ukrainian intelligence reports suggest the rate of production of Russian missiles has doubled in recent months.

    Sanctions have failed, so…

Ukraine has given the UK government the names of six Russian firms and research institutes involved in missile production which it says have not yet been sanctioned.

    …more sanctions, pajalusta!

*so it turns out the Russian peace offer of April 22 – the one Boris was told to scotch – included retreating to their pre-Feb borders and giving Ukraine back all the land they’ve since legally incorporated into Russia. Zelensky wanted to negotiate but was overruled by his country’s new Western owners.

I.e. at least 100,000 Ukrainians have since been killed or maimed in a Quixotic effort that’s never, in a million years, likely to result in a military victory as good as the negotiated settlement Putin was offering at the start.

    Shite, intit?

  3. The reason Britain is in a position to violate property rights as they request is because we have a long history of *not* doing it. If your property is safe, you keep it in place and try to develop it for the benefit of your heirs. If it can be snatched by a politician at any moment, you run away and hide it somewhere else. That’s how this Russian wealth came to be in the UK in the first place.

Poor, corrupt countries are always advising rich ones to follow their crooked path. Without ever a hint of self-awareness.

  4. Counteroffensive going well then? [ + other snark ]*

Too early to tell, Steve. The Ukrainians don’t have the luxury of blitzkrieg numbers so must fight smarter but slower to begin with to probe the Russian lines. Once they find / create and exploit a large weakness . . . well, I’m sure you at least have full confidence in Ivan not to fall apart and run in disarray.

Logic fail. Reading what you quoted it seems the missile companies mentioned were not sanctioned – so it’s not a question of sanctions failing, it’s a question of them not being applied. The “more” sanctions request is actually a “some” sanctions request. You seem to think that Russia has been sanctioned at the level of a naval blockade or something.

How very generous. We’ll call off our failed invasion if you recognise our previous theft of your territory (then we’ll invade again in a couple of years). How silly of the Ukrainians to not accept this brilliant deal when all they had was their own proven ability to halt the Russians plus the western world coming together in their support.
    .

*Funny init, unintentionally of course, that when the Russians are blustering about nuclear weapons, you are not all:
    “invasion going well, then?”

  5. Thanks for reposting the output of Putin’s office, Steve.

so it turns out the Russian peace offer of April 22 – the one Boris was told to scotch – included retreating to their pre-Feb borders and giving Ukraine back all the land they’ve since legally incorporated into Russia. You really think Putin’s negotiating positions are bankable? Jeezus! You really don’t get this, do you? This really isn’t about Ukraine. It’s about Putin’s Russia. Which only marginally aligns with Russians’ Russia. It’s about men in the Kremlin & power. After Ukraine it would the Baltic states, Moldova, Georgia … Eventually Poland, Finland & anything else they fancied grabbing. It’s really not hard to understand. There’s enough examples from history. Or Orwell. Even the West isn’t an innocent. Retaining power requires an enemy to unite people against. Just conquering one of them just provides the incentive for the next.

Well, it’s been 14 days and so far the counteroffensive is going so well for the Good Guys, we’re already talking about the next counteroffensive including F-16’s.

    Oof.

A particularly vigorous cry-wank for Sunday morning

I.e. I’m unarguably, infuriatingly, right again.

so it’s not a question of sanctions failing

Sanctions : they never fail, so long as you don’t define what success looks like.

How very generous. We’ll call off our failed invasion if you recognise our previous theft of your territory (then we’ll invade again in a couple of years). How silly of the Ukrainians to not accept this brilliant deal when all they had was their own proven ability to halt the Russians plus the western world coming together in their support.

Since then they’ve lost 20% of their country, several million refugees, over 100,000 casualties and at least $400Bn worth of damage to the remnant Ukraine.

    So far.

If fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian doesn’t work, what’s Plan B?

Bloke in Spain – You really think Putin’s negotiating positions are bankable?

Who else are we/the Ukrainians meant to negotiate with? Phillip Schofield?

After Ukraine it would the Baltic states, Moldova, Georgia … Eventually Poland, Finland & anything else they fancied grabbing. It’s really not hard to understand. There’s enough examples from history.

So the story is, Russia has so far shown no ability and little appetite to occupy even the unfriendly western parts of Ukraine. But they’ll invade several NATO members one day unless we ACT NOW.

And if we don’t continue to escalate the war in Ukraine, there’s a danger the war will in Ukraine will escalate.

    L’Shana Haba’ah B’Moldova!

  7. The seizing of Russian assets is a major milestone of the West’s slide into despotism

Its also the reason that the BRICS are expanding so fast thst the fucking French want to join, and the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The rest of the world has looked at the weaponisation of the financial system, and are forming alternative arrangements.

Again, if this is what success looks like, what would you consider failure.

And BIS, PJF, you fucking ball-less sheep.

  8. I.e. I’m unarguably, infuriatingly, right again.

No, just tediously, childishly wrong on that to a degree not worth engaging with seriously.
    .

Well, it’s been 14 days and so far the counteroffensive is going so well for the Good Guys, we’re already talking about the next counteroffensive including F-16’s.

Continued support will only come with this counteroffensive succeeding. Success will be, at a minimum, reaching Melitopol (or other vital link), and holding, so as to effectively cut the land bridge to Crimea. If no strategic objective is achieved then it’s almost certain that support for Ukraine will dwindle.
    .

But they’ll invade several NATO members one day unless we ACT NOW.

Yes, of course. Except those will be ex-NATO countries as that organisation will have disintegrated after its pathetic failure to stand up to a bunch of useless, drunken pikeys Russian aggression.

  9. @Flubber
I’m far from in favour of seizing Russian assets myself. The Russian oligarchs exist because current Russian system produced them. It’s the only game in town. And you’re right. If it’s done to Russia, who else will be looking over their shoulder? In the world, the Western system is almost an aberration. And even that has its hands grubby. The default is what you have in Russia, India, various African & Asian states. Not to mention S. America. It’s pretty but it’s reality.

  10. It’s not pretty

I’d add, seizing of assets is actually heading down the same road as all of the above. Arbitrary power.

  11. It’s also counterproductive. Embargoing their assets, maybe. They have offshored the wealth they’ve captured from the Russian system. But the prospect of recovering them would incentivise their supporting Russian regime change. Losing them will just put them firmly in Putin’s camp.

  12. Britain has long had a habit of seizing private assets from it’s subjects. That is why we have a Third Amendment.

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

  13. Its also the reason that the BRICS are expanding so fast thst the fucking French want to join . . .

Having your BRICS wet dream again, Flubber? Hate to disappoint but it’s still just a talking shop for dodgy outfits. There’s no honour amongst thieves, especially when half of them have simmering conflicts.

There’s no evidence that France wants to join BRICS; Macron is most likely attempting to look big by being controversial.

If you think Chinese commie diplomacy is enough to end the long running Sunni and Shia show then you must be having to do lots of laundry. Let’s see how well that lasts the Mullahs getting the bomb.

  14. Chinese seem to have firmly embraced the idea of don’t interrupt your enemies while they are busy making mistakes. There is an element of politicians as well as generals fighting the last (cold) war here as Ukraine conflict has cast serious doubts on Russian capability to invade the west, this isn’t the 1960/70’s Warsaw pact v NATO anymore.
Negotiated peace isn’t pretty, but the alternatives are someone losing (at what cost?) or never ending war

“ Well, it’s been 14 days and so far the counteroffensive is going so well for the Good Guys, we’re already talking about the next counteroffensive including F-16’s.”

Russia’s had over a year to dig in and prepare defences, with or with F-16s it’s going to take months just to get a decent sized breakthrough, let alone evict the Russians.

As for peace talks, as long as Russia is sending back castrated POWs and tortured wives Ukraine and the rest of the former Warsaw Pact countries aren’t going to be interested, and probably won’t even if Russia stops its barbaric practices, and nor should we.

  16. Bloke in North Dorset

As for the OP I agree, they can fuck off although I don’t blame Ukr for asking / demanding. It’s for us to tell them why.

The guys organising the Ukraine Recovery Conference have been looking in to how it can be done legally and despite having had lawyers looking in to it for a long time haven’t found a solution and they insist it should be legal.

As they said, if Ukr really wants the international finance community to get involved they need to continue their reforms and to root out corruption.

If anyone’s interested they can hear them talking on the Power Vertical Podcast dated 8 June. They’re serious guys with lots of finance experience and whilst pro Ukr they’re under no illusions.

  17. The counter-offensive proper hasn’t started yet. All we’ve seen so far are probing/shaping efforts.

  18. Bloke in North Dorset

“ ⚡️ISW: Ukrainian forces may be temporarily pausing counteroffensive operations to reevaluate tactics.

The Institute for the Study of War quoted the head of the Estonian Defense Forces Intelligence Center Colonel Margo Grosberg who said on June 16 that “we won’t see an offensive (operation by Ukraine) over the next seven days.””

The Estonians have provided some of the most incisive analysis since the start.

  19. . . . who said on June 16 that “we won’t see an offensive (operation by Ukraine) over the next seven days.””

That could be a prediction or it could be misinformation for Russian ears.
The only useful assessments for us are historic – the Ukrainians or Russians have or haven’t advanced or retreated.

The Ukrainians took Pyatykhatky village yesterday and overnight (confirmed by Russians) and this success threatens further Russian positions. So some offensive actions are occurring on some level. The Russians are responding to these small advances with massive artillery bombardments (to which the Ukrainians have adapted) as if they are dealing with a main thrust, so they’ll be romping through their ammunition and revealing their supply routes as they need more. No surprise that a big depot was hit yesterday.
