Gulf Stream could collapse as early as 2025, study suggests
A collapse would bring catastrophic climate impacts but scientists disagree over the new analysis
Nonsense. Unless you move the continents and stop the Earth spinning the Gulf Stream is not about to close down.
The shutting down of the vital ocean currents, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (Amoc) by scientists, would bring catastrophic climate impacts.
a) that’s not the Gulf Stream and b) it would be a mild inceonvenience – it has stopped before – not a catastrophe.
It would actually bring the Arctic ice back…..
So all you Brits would be rushing to emigrate to a nice warm place like Oz then?
Am I right Tim??
They were predicting the demise of the Gulf Stream decades ago and it didn’t happen. What do they do, rake through some forty year old failed predictions to see if any of them will fly this time around? Are they hoping that there are enough people who weren’t even born the last time that they were wrong?
Ah, the Guardian’s daily dose of climate porn…
It’s a toss-up whether the so-called climate “scientists” are actively dishonest, incompetent or simply brainless. My money would be on dishonesty especially with most of the leading lights in the business.
‘rake through some forty year old failed predictions’
Well Stonyground, I’ve just lately been noticing a revival of talk about flying saucers—oops UFO’s. So I suppose that nothing’s too old-fashioned to be unworthy of another go at it.
Prof David Thornalley, at University College London, UK, agreed the study had large caveats and unknowns and said further research was essential: “But if the statistics are robust and a relevant way to describe how the actual Amoc behaves, then this is a very concerning result.”
Translation: “We don’t know if the stats are accurate and we don’t know if actually describes reality, but we’re going to ratchet up the fear-mongering until you give us more grant money…”
The problem with UFOs is that sightings tended to dry up when everyone started carrying a camera/video recorder in their pockets. Did the aliens all say “Oh shit they all have smartphones now, I think we had best go home before we get filmed”? Or is it more likely that those previous sightings were spurious and that’s why we don’t now have tons of high res pics?
It’s a toss-up whether the so-called climate “scientists” are actively dishonest, incompetent or simply brainless.
The Nature paper is actually quite a good one, and full of caveats, if you bother reading it. The problem is the Guardian’s reporting, which conflates the Gulf Stream and the AMOC, and is the usual alarmism and taking of worst cases as definite that you expect from a G climate article. These days the G is the left wing mirror image of the Daily Mail, with shrieking bullshit to trigger the biases of their core readership.
As I said in a recent post, the primary purpose of science is to provide remunerative careers for scientists. This “study” didn’t come free. It was commissioned & paid for. It’s a product aimed at consumers. From there we move off into politics & politicians which again don’t come free but have the advantage of being self commissioning. Heaven help the consumers.
These days the G is the left wing mirror image of the Daily Mail, with shrieking bullshit to trigger the biases of their core readership.
I have long referred to the Graun as the Mail for lefties, while the Times is the Guardian for top rate tax payers. Meanwhile the Mail itself has (at least online) turned into Woman’s Own. The Terriblegraph meanwhile is just shit.
I tell grauniad readers that the grauniad and the Mail are pretty much identical, except that the dog whistle is set to a slightly different pitch. Winds them up a treat…
Far less totty in the Graun though. Unless you like your totty with bollocks, of course.
When even an Eco Scientist says the Guardian is wrong and the science the Guardian is reporting is wrong then it must be very very wrong.

“A small branch of the Gulf Stream (the “North Atlantic Drift”) heads towards the Norwegian and Greenland Seas, which is the small piece that connects the Gulf Stream to the AMOC system.
That’s it. The Gulf Stream and the AMOC are only connected by the North Atlantic Drift.
Think of a super highway of warm water going in a big loop around the Atlantic. That’s the Gulf Stream.
A small “side road” of water (about 10% of the Gulf Stream) heads north — like an exit — towards the far north, off the coast of Norway & Greenland.
That the NA Drift.
….
A bad analogy, maybe, but you can consider:
– The Gulf Stream is a superhighway of warm water circulating around the North Atlantic
– A small road (the North Atlantic Drift) branches off, heading north
– And this goes to a third, smaller road, where the AMOC begins”
I’ve just used that as the basis of a piece for some septics. Lovely piece of analysis.
