Am amusement

The, err, minister in Slovenia, about the size of a London Borough, tells the world, eh? And that’s resounding?

#The Global Footprint Network arose out of the PhD thesis of a guy called Marcus Wackernagel. Full marks to hte guy for turning that into a well paid – and high social status – career. But it is indeed all the most entire bollocks.

  1. Slovenia is a bit more than five times the size of Essex and has a bigger population.
I think you misplaced your decimal point when choosing your comparison

  2. 2 million people? It’s not even Wales, is it? Next size down therefore. London Boroughs 400k tops? So, OK, Greater Manchester? Brum?

  3. In case you’re wondering, I have no intention whatsoever of donating to the Global Footprint Network.

Grifters gonna grift. I mean, it beats having a real job, doesn’t it?

  5. Is this the thing where I commented elsewhere:
    > If we all consumed like we did in 1970, we should need 2.21 Earths
    > now. But so far, it’s “only” 1.7, partly because agricultural
    > improvements have increased Earth’s total biocapacity, but largely
    > because most of those additional people live in abject poverty.

Well, that’s an outright lie to start with.
In 1970 about 60% of the world’s population lived in absolute poverty.
In 2020 about 5% of the world’s population lived in absolute poverty.
Even taking population increase into account, that’s a REDUCTION from
    2bn to 0.3bn.

It’s got to be repeated again and again and again. They are LYING to us.
LYING LYING LYING LYING LYING LYING LYING.

  6. Slovenia is the first ex-communist country to draw level with the UK on income/head basis, so they must be doing something right.
Oh right, not being communist for 34 years is the thing they are doing right. That is the key. Everything else being brought about from the natural course of things.

  7. Greta Thunberg is right. We need to stop the next global extinction. Put humanity and nature before short term economics.

They won’t be getting wealthier for much longer if they start on this sort of crap.

    All too true RichardT.

One notes that China and India just lie to bullshit us into keeping up the nonsense. They seem to be doing fine. At least economically.

  10. The Slovenes are wealthy on a PPP per capita basis. Which is a metric that is not often used in U.K. politics. They prefer the inflated-by-immigration GDP measure.

If you adjusts for quality of life then the average U.K. citizen is worse off than much of the ex-communist block. It might just have something to do with the U.K. state spending by what we inherited and then borrowing from our kids on supporting consumption of people who don’t work or add much economic value.

I don’t know how well china or india are actually doing, but give the latter another decade or two and the mountains of rubbish and shite will probably have rotted down to become huge hydrocarbon reserves.

    Maybe that’s the plan!

As for china, all the tofu dregs buildings (is there other kind) will probably have collapsed.

Maybe the west is finished, but fuck knows what is going to replace it.

Don’t worry. If the recent flooding doesn’t undermine the foundations, a decent earthquake will. China has a history of periodic, magnitude 7.0-8.0 earthquakes.

Then all that bad development (along with at least some of the residents) can be swept away (or at least under the carpet).

I am trying to work out if the post is satirical or you have wandered on to the blog by accident?

I think if we give over our future to a severely disturbed teenager who is based on a character in Spider Man then we’re deserving of our fate.

So a product of the university system

On PhD’s In order to qualify for one you need to produce advanced work that makes a significant new contribution to knowledge in your field.

Maybe a hundred years ago that might have worked. But now? You’re a long way down the road of declining returns. Actually doing this becomes progressively more difficult. So to produce the PhD’s the university hierarchy requires the bar to what’s ‘significant” is constantly lowered. And the university system spawns all sorts of nonsense because there’s a built in requirement for it.

If he can’t be arsed to put any effort into a trolling above that pathetic attempt, then he’s best just ignored.

  16. not being communist for 34 years is the thing they are doing right

Unfortunately not a lesson that we have learned in this country.
