David Jones, the Tory MP who criticised JustGiving for making money out of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore’s charity NHS walk, said despite the website providing a “useful service” and being entitled to charge a “reasonable fee”, it remains “essentially a commercial organisation”.
“The 15 percent “tip” is a very hefty markup on the donation – and is in addition to the fee it charges the recipient.
“The ‘tip’ has clearly swollen JustGiving’s profits very significantly. JustGiving should urgently consider whether 15 percent is a fair markup and reduce it to a more reasonable level.”
How lovely that a Tory MP knows what the correct mark up is. With a brain that size why isn’t he off curing cancer, making superconductors?
He’s done it already. But it’s a secret…
As always he has the option to found a competing business that charges a smaller commission and takes the business away from JustGiving.
I always knew I had a good reason for not donating.
Tim, as with the Wonga fiasco, our politicians know exactly what the proper price is despite having no knowledge whatsoever of whatever it is they are pontificating on.
Bogan, perhaps it’s the Jewish / Scottish / are there any other racial stereotypes that are thought to be ‘careful with their money’* in you?
While the government sees fit to throw my money around to every good cause / grifter they choose, I’ll not donate to any charity cause. If they stopped all grants to charities (and foreign aid) they deem worthy, people like me would consider giving to charities of our choice.
*Please let us know in the comments. Similar to the Carribeans being particularly fastidous mentioned on another thred here.
Well Addolff, part of the family came from Stranraer in Scotland.
Dunno about the Jews. But as Leo pointed out to me, part came from Sussex. So possibly I’m related to some Eyties? Were there any Jewish legionnaires?
I give absolutely nothing to charity. I always have severe doubts about the people running them. However I’ve always tried to provide direct help to people needing it. Like doing work on homes needed it for little or nothing, depending. There’s now a thriving business in Colombia keeps several families fed by their own efforts came out of a few grand carefully deployed & supervised. But I do not provide income for the charity aristocracy.
There’s been a long conversation going on through Whatsapp this morning between an amiga & I. There’s someone we want to dig out of the shit she’s got herself in. There’s also a child involved. Sure I could throw money at the problem. But being on the receiving end of money’s how’s she’s got herself in the shit in the first place. So we’re trying to construct a way she can work her way out of her own problems without anyone suffering. Or rather, suffering enough to provide the incentive to get herself sorted out. It’s a very fine balance. We’re actually trying to enforce on her a learning process that she’s never in the past benefited from. So my money & a lot of somebody else’s experience who’s also gone through shit in her life. Over a period, it may cost me a few thou. But the less it costs, the better we will have succeeded.

Or, of course, setting up and running his own charity financial intermediary business?
As for the subject of the original post, looks to me like a “Give me your money” set up. Sounds like the restaurants make “service charges” & rely you to be uncomfortable not leaving a tip for the waiter. The costs of running this thing must be trivial. It’s pretty well all ware. And as far as I’m aware, that 1.9% + 20p ” card provider charge” will include a kickback to the service provider initiating the transaction. That’s how these things usually work.
Incidentally, trying to sort this out made me realise that that #LAZYGIRL tag is really another name for prostitute, isn’t it? And the alarming proliferation of prostitution these days. Because what else can you call it when women secure employment & generous salaries mostly on the basis of being a woman? So Alison Rose. Banker or whore. It’s such a fine division, isn’t it?
I thort when you have a service charge added to the bill you don’t leave a tip on top.
Seems to be only London that does service charges. Have I been getting it wrong?
Being in a line of work where accepting or offering a tip would result in jail time for 2 people, I rather hate the concept.
Bis, kickbacks on merchant services are available to large retailers, meaning 6 zeroes upwards. It does amaze me that just processing payments is worth a few percent. Couldn’t have anything at all to do with the effective duopoly…
BIS,

I don’t think it’s about that, so much as the effect of WFH on women. But there is a sexual element to it.
Here’s my take on the effect of WFH on young women: women have now lost their sexual influence over men in the office. A lot of women in offices depend on men to do their jobs. Journalists like to pretend that women get a raw deal, but it’s the men who are the office experts, whether it’s the detail of a product or the how to make Excel do a thing. A woman will slide up to a man and she’s pretty and smells of l’Air du Temps and even if men don’t think they’re going to get a shag, it’s pleasurable just to have them around. Men will spend a lot of time helping women, far more than they’ll help other men because of this.
If the woman is now at the other end of the Teams call, it ain’t the same. You’re not going to care so much about helping them. So women can no longer get men giving them time like they did to do the tricky parts of the job for them. To do a serious job they have to put in the actual work now of learning things, of becoming masters in Excel like men do. So, they’re scaling back to what they can do. They’re going to get a real shock, though, because earning well for a non-technical, 9-5 remote job with no risks depends on good fortune. If that’s what you’re doing, I can replace you with lots of women living in Krakow, Bangalore or Chile who are charging less.

Aaah! Camgirls.
