At least one of the nutters recognises electoral poison

Gavin Newsom, California’s Democrat governor, has defied his own party by blocking a law meaning divorcing parents could have lost custody of their children if they refused to accept their gender identity.

Democrats in the state said parents who do not “affirm” their child’s chosen gender could have a “detrimental impact on [their] mental health and well-being”.

Under the plans, judges in custody cases would be required to consider whether parents recognise their children as transgender as part of a standard test on “the health, safety, and welfare of the child”.

Parents who did not accept their child’s chosen gender identity may have been less likely to be given custody.

For that we can be thankful, one of them at least begins to get it…..

  1. A move akin to Rishi’s empty net zero promises. Newsom no doubt subscribes as earnestly to the tranny madness as the Tories subscribe to net zero.

  2. Gruesome making a play for el Presidente?
Recognising that the tranny policies are electoral poison even for the mentalists that vote Dem, given the lefts track record we can be confident that once he got power he would “turn on a dime” and reinstate said policies.

  3. Why are so many people in such positions of power pandering to 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the population?

  4. jgh, because the Shouty People are vastly overrepresented in the circles where these people float around in through a very carefully constructed Long March.

  5. He also vetoed a bill that would have forbidden AI driven trucks in California. The bill was very popular with the greens and teamsters union. Not so popular with the techie crowd.

Tell me you’re running for president without running for president.

  6. Progressive California judges (i.e., the vast majority) have been working this trans-kiddies philosophy into their custody rulings for some time. I’d guess that Newsome was clued in on this, and recognized that he could safely veto this without impeding what is already a status quo, and thus appear centrist without the pain of actually being centrist.

  7. Newsom is no dummy, and certainly no slouch. Impoverishing the state is his first priority and stuff like affirming genders in divorce cases can get in the way of that if it could cost legislative seats. However, I suspect that as far as he is concern, this was back burner stuff to be done later. He doesn’t regard it as nonsense.
