Questions of social and economic class must be at the centre of our response to the climate crisis, to address the huge inequalities between the carbon footprints of the rich and poor and prevent a backlash against climate policies, the economist Thomas Piketty has said.
Regulations will be needed to outlaw goods and services that have unnecessarily high greenhouse gas emissions, such as private jets, outsized vehicles, and flights over short distances, he said in an interview with the Guardian.
And who is going to be the Commissar who desides what is “unnecessarily high” then?
No Spud, sit down, this is not one of your ideas. Despite that being the ultimate Fat Controller position of course. For there’s now a metric to decde what will not be allowed to happen. But it’s a metric with discretion – discretion that will be, and yes it is will be – exercised by whoever is that Fat Controller.
You know, printing that book that says the Fat Controller is a poopie head would have unnecessarily high emissions so, sorry, no can do and so on. The flight to take the FC for a well deserved winter break in the Maldvies is *necessary*.

I have a better idea: Thomas Piketty should come round to see my compost pile.
Take a good look, Tommy.
At least it’s a refreshing change, instead of the usual pleb-bashing, to see the pleasures of the privileged being challenged.
But jets for the likes of Sunak to do his 3 election PR visits in a day, that’ll still be fine no doubt. Just another form of ZiL lane, except in the sky.
Going to be a bit tough for all of those small Scottish islands though, especially without a decent ferry service. Hopefully, some enterprising entrepreneur will invent a plane that runs on sheep shit, to keep their lifelines open.
I”ll disclose my carbon footprint if Thomas Piketty will disclose his.
I already know which of the two of us is killing the planet.
The simplest solution is that everyone like Piketty and Sunak (or Albanese here in Oz) lives on horseshit and walks everywhere. And of course is flogged if they don’t get there faster than my private jet.
Indeed one could argue that any Green that has not starved to death is guilty of Gaia-rape and should be starved to death.
“outsized vehicles”: does this mean he’s the sort of little squirt who finds the headroom in a Mercedes adequate? Because I don’t. I prefer a Landrover: headroom, shoulder-room, and room to stretch my knee.
“high greenhouse gas emissions”: not us, guv. We drive so few miles that the emissions would be well approximated by zero.
Wot I say is: first we kill all the neo-Puritans.
after you kill all the new-Puritans you will, of course, put them on Steve’s compost pile.
TD – technically, the lions will be the ones to put them on Steve’s compost pile (after a bit of straining, no doubt)
I’m sure pigs would be better suited, the lions would kill their prey first, whereas the pigs don’t mind a bit of squealing as they nosh into the nice tender bits around the stomach and groin.
. . . to address the huge inequalities between the carbon footprints of the rich and poor and prevent a backlash against climate policies, the economist Thomas Piketty has said.
Amusingly, the envy-based “economics” equals shit climate policy. As far as CO2 emissions go there is a huge inequality between the “carbon footprints” of rich and poor. That of the many poor is large whilst that of the few rich is small. The climate models don’t care about per-capita carbon dioxide, they just
calculatemake up results based on overall levels.According to climate “science”, the rich swanning about and having great lives doesn’t cause da warmings but the poor having basically tolerable lives does. It’s a great result for the elite community but a tough sell elsewhere.
*Is* he an economist? I thought he was a columnist.

You don’t even get the bus – you take the train. The prole-stacks you’ll be authorized to inhabit will be conveniently located within three miles of a fixed rail line station – can’t be having the ability to easily re-configure cities as inhabitant desires change usage patterns.
Gotta keep things ‘legible’ for the Fat Controllers to be able to manage them.
Even the Granddad recently published an article saying that the top 1% of global population only produced 16% of these “emissions”. Not enough to make a difference, is it?
*Is* he an columnist? I thought he was a Communist.
“*Is* he a columnist?”
Fifth columnist.
Is there a climate crisis? If yes, what impact can “our” response have on it? And if “our” response can have an impact why should we presuppose that questions of social and economic class are germane?
Does Piketty always come down on the side of the fence where social and economic class are paramount?
I’ve never been able to get worked up about a crisis more than a billion years in the future. A couple of million, well, I might just write myself a note. But once it goes over a billion, the way my memory’s going, I’d probably just forget to do anything about it anyway…
Climate change will be replaced with this scare tactic when everyone is bored of it (from https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214629621003327):
“At a continued 2.4% annual increase in power production, the surface of the Earth reaches boiling temperatures in about 400 years and reaches the surface temperature of the Sun within 1000 years.”
It’s covered in this video as well – https://youtu.be/9vRtA7STvH4?si=TKFzFKQd38xAzJ5X
Apparently we fucked if we want to see in the dark, have some warmth or anything that requires energy use. So, we might as well give them all the finger (and lions).
