Eurostar cancels all trains after tunnel floods under River Thames
Thousands stranded after services cancelled between London and European capitals
The flooding, first discovered in the tunnel on Friday night, was caused by a “fire-control system”, Thames Water said. A video taken inside the tunnel shows water gushing onto the tracks from a pipe attached to the wall.
Tsk, Johnny Foreigner, eh?
Just can’t trust the frogs. Agreed. Just can’t trust Thames Water either. Bleeding us dry (!) with no investment in the infrastructure like maintenance. Got to think of the dividends….
Ebbsfleet tunnel is flooded. OK, but trains can’t run from Paris/ Amsterdam to Ashford and back again? This doesn’t sound as simple as is being made out.
French Eurostar workers went out on strike just before Christmas too…….
Another good reason for having Waterloo as the London terminus.
“Water in Thames. Continent cut off”
“… was caused by a “fire-control system”…”
Misinformation. It was cause by climate change and Brexit.
Addolff, Eurostar ended stopping at Ebbsfleet and Ashford in 2020 and have not reinstated international services from those stations for “profitability reasons” and don’t plan to until 2025.
ANNRQ, thanks for the info.
A nnrq & Addolff
But that terminal at Ahford is still there and links to the CharingX line. I’d have thought that thete is plenty of spare capacity now to the coast to run specials. Or bus people to Ebbsfleet.
BBC headline was Eurostar cancelled because of flooding in tunnel.
We I the only one who’s first that was that 22 mile tunnel under the oggin? Bloody useless subs.
Fool that I am, I’d have thought a multi-billion £/€ business might have contingency plans for what to do if HS1 is blocked. The customs facilities at Ebbsfleet and Ashford are still there, so it’s a case of moving a load of Border Farce and Police aux Frontières down there and run a replacement bus service. Not a five minute job, but better than running no trains at all for 48 hours, I would have thought.
