The best town in the world

Apparently:

There are caveats to Skerries’ anointment: Miller does not compare it to other towns in Ireland or elsewhere; his research skewed towards middle-class, older residents; interviewees cited binge-drinking, cocaine use, petty crime and other problems; others lamented the lack of a cinema, hotel or swimming pool.

The overall portrait is of a prosperous, forward-looking community humming with a love of sport – Gaelic football, hurling, rugby, cricket, bowling, sailing, karate, hockey, kitesurfing, sea swimming – plus arts, drama, bridge, bingo and environmental activism.

A thoroughly, overweeningly, totally, bourgeois town of 11,000 people. Almost certainly religiously, ethnically, monocultural.

Hmm. So how’s The Guardian going to spin that as being the finest place in the world to live? The way they’ve done it I guess, to entirely ignore the point.

Some numbers here for the constituency (a 20x sized area) and look at where the non white Irish are concentrated.

  1. Over the next few years that 35-50% non-Irish block is going to spread every closer to “The best place in the world to live”. Enjoy it while you can people of Skerries.

Oh no, nasty suspicious me. There’s nothing to worry about after all:-

the Tidy Towns committee, whose volunteers include immigrants from eastern Europe and asylum seekers who live in a local shelter. “It’s a good way for us to get to know them.”

  2. I’m sure they can easily accommodate that two and a half million Palestinians that ‘THEY’ have to find somewhere to dump.

  3. Things are going to change. I’ll bet in a decade the locals will be asking for Ireixit, and getting banged up for the privilege 🙁

  4. Bogan

Judging by the population growth in Gaza, unquestionably the least effective genocide in history, within 2 generations 2.5 million would become 10m and represent two thirds of the “Irish”.

  5. They should send that sneering racist git Jon Snow to report on the town, so he can reprise his ‘I’ve never seen so many white people in one place” comment.

More years ago than I dare to think about I read a book that was based on the idea that rich Palestinians started slowly buying Irish businesses, land and estates and moving Palestinians in to the country. Eventually it got to the point that they owned the vast majority of the country and they took over the government and moved the rest of the middle east Palestinians in en masse, confining Irish trouble makers to concentration camps.

  7. Irish government has an official published plan to aim to increase the population of Ireland from 5million to 6million by 2040.
As Irish people aren’t having kids at above replacement rate that means a million immigrants so by 2040 Ireland will go from its current 1 million people (20% of population) born outside Ireland to 2million people (40% of population). Seems a bit odd to have fought for independence to then just give your country away

  8. @ BiND
No. He’s probably right. What’s not being factored in is; if that policy continues the numbers of Irish who will leave.
And entirely possible. Ireland’s always been a bit of an Irish myth to the Irish. Why the vast majority of self described Irish live somewhere else. They seem to have little interest in returning to their “own country”, do they?

  9. Wow, that is a well weird age profile. What happened between 1985 and 2005 that stopped Irish having babbies? It looks like the UK 1939 census, 20 years after WW1.

  10. What happened between 1985 and 2005 that stopped Irish having babbies?

Contraception was illegal in Ireland from 1935 until 1980, when it was legalised. The ban reflected Catholic teachings on sexual morality.

That would be an ecumenical matter.

He doesn’t need to visit, watching this would be sufficient
