  1. Is it that shitty? It’s a while since I lived in That London but is £30kish that awful for what seems to be a 2nd job for a journo? There’s no talk of years of experience needed.

  2. Dennis, Clear-Eyed As Always

The average salary for a London garbage collector was £32,320 in 2022, so the salary range for junior journalists seems to be a bit high, if you ask me.

  3. “Or more correctly: holy shit the market for junior journos is seriously over-supplied.”

Look at how many journos are now women and gays. When women and gays take over, that’s because the people who care about getting the Benjamins are leaving.

Lots of gleeful stories out there about the growing number of women in winemaking and orchestral conducting. Yeah, because the margins are declining.

  4. It’s affecting all “professions”. Software development is similarly crashing. I’ve just been going through job vacancies, with positions listed at £22,000. That’s minimum wage. And these are often positions I’ve seen advertised before, and they’ve turned down all the applicants, and are advertising again. So not only are they offering crap wages, they’re turning away those people who do apply. And then screaming blue murder that there’s a skills shortage and demanding MOOOOARRR!!!!!! immigrants.

And these are often positions I’ve seen advertised before, and they’ve turned down all the applicants, and are advertising again. So not only are they offering crap wages, they’re turning away those people who do apply.

Perhaps because the only people applying for a job paying crap wages have crap skills.

    Quelle surprise monsieur!

All this tells me is that there’s a crap company doing crap work looking for crap employees at crap wages. Anyone with more than seven working brain cells who is looking for a position doesn’t bother to finish reading the advert, much less apply for the job.

  6. Idk how you could live on under £50K outside London if you have a wife or children to support.

And even that would be shit. After tax, mortgage, utilities and essentials you’ll be lucky to be able to save a couple of hundred quid a month.

Is that why people have credit card debt?

  7. Supply and demand. If the supply doesn’t supply what you demand, you take whatever the hell you *can* get, not stamp your foot and scthream and scthream.

There’s no granary bread, I’ll make do with wholemeal.
There’s no wholemeal, I’ll make do with brown.
There’s no brown, I’ll make do with white.
There’s no applicants with six years’ experience of the systems we use in house, I’LL SCREAM AND SCREAM AND SCREAM AND SCREAM UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT DOES SOMETHING.

The very fact that employers are turning people down is PROOF that there is NO shortage. If there was a shortage, they’d take whoever they could get their hands on. The fact they are *not* taking whoever they can get their hands on is proof that there is no shortage. So, by turning people down *AND* claiming there are shortages is complete proof they are lying.

  8. Also, supply and demand: people apply for jobs with crap wages, because it’s either a crap wage that *exists*, or a wage that does not exist at all and starvation.

  9. If they can actually do that they can earn far more money doing that for a company which stands to make money from them doing that internally, or even promoting them by doing that externally.

So they don’t really need that set of skills then?

  10. Dennis, Inconveniently Noting Reality

Also, supply and demand: people apply for jobs with crap wages, because it’s either a crap wage that *exists*, or a wage that does not exist at all and starvation.

And yet the position offering crap wages is still being advertised as open.

Lots of wogs choosing starvation these days?

  11. Here Are The Benefits Of This Job ……
Crap basic salary, but great opportunities for insider trading, and being a journo this isn’t going to be illegal because what you know “is” public information.

  12. «Here Are The Skills You’ll Need»

It’s in journalism for heaven’s sake: the only skill required is that of appearing authoritative on subjects you know nothing about.
