Not really, no

Wind farms, solar farms and other developments totalling 15 extra gigawatts have joined the queue since October – roughly equivalent to the output of 12 nuclear power stations.

Roughly equal to nameplate capacity maybe, but output I think not?

  1. Maybe 5 Hinkley Points. Of course, nothing when the wind doesn’t blow. We really need a smart meter green tariff where devout Greens are cut off whenever the wind doesn’t blow 🙂

  2. 12 nuclear power stations? So is 12 nuclear power stations what we need to build as backup for when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine?

  3. *Nameplate capacity” *snort*

Well, telling them they have to stump up the cash for their grid connection would get rid of most of them. “You want to build an intermittent power source out in the middle of nowhere? Great, here’s the rubber stamp, that will be a couple of billion for the network upgrades before I bang it down please.”

  4. I keep thinking of the simplest way to explain this to politicians, but they only believe something when they see it with their own eyes. They saw Greta having a hissy fit against Trump and the crowd going into ecstatic applause and thought “I’ll have some of that!” and Western energy policy was formulated on the spot. But the irony of their chauffer driven car grinding to a halt because it’s run out of petrol and the chauffer saying “I don’t understand it, sir. The fuel tank’s capacity is 18 gallons” would be lost on them.

and/or the sun is not performing.

  6. Grist – there’s no thinking going on, our elected officials receive their instructions at Davos and daily via the FT or BBC (penis).

  7. Instead of shrinking, the list of projects seeking grid connections has only grown since Ofgem and ESO announced their crackdown last autumn

Our government is completely illegitimate and at war with us. But they’re also stunningly incompetent, so we might well win this thing.

  8. No Haber-Bosch factories running in Great Britain in 2024 now.
Might as well re-wild the lot and abolish the beef quota from South America.

Actually definitely not. Nuclear really does NOT like to switched off when the wind DOES blow.
So this is 12-24 ordinary gas power stations we need as backup

  10. @P-G Not really. You simply make sure those nukes have a proper energy dump for at least 20-25% of their capacity at all times.

Like industrial processes that also really, and I mean really don’t react very well to being shut down all of a sudden.
Like foundries, chemical plants and refineries.

Which are doubly necessary because those plants actually produce the stuff all those Vegans and Ecoloons need to live because they’ve Sworn Off Animal Cruelty.

But then again.. That assumes a certain measure of intelligence in the people involved in making those decisions.
For which we have enough anecdotal evidence from the past couple of decades that this is the one thing they sorely lack.
And for some mysterious reason they still get elected.

Ah well…. When the blackouts hit, it’s time to go Medieval.. in many, many ways..

I hang my head in shame.

  12. What is the point in adding that additional 15GW notional capacity to the grid when the sun shines and the wind blows anyways? You can’t use it to actually do anything like make fertiliser, or childcare cheaper a bit of steel or build extra storeys on your house. Can’t even build a ferry to the Hebrides. It’s only a matter of time before cement manufacture ends.

The Lib Dems are leading on net zero by 2045, Labour on decarbonising the electric grid by 2030.

And nobody is asking if Hamas should do the sensible thing and surrender when you’re getting a kicking.
