If who you can sell it to is conditional then the ownership is conditional:
The media minister said on Tuesday that she was concerned in principle about a foreign government owning a British media organisation.
Julia Lopez made the comments in a Commons debate about the proposed takeover of The Telegraph by RedBird IMI, a group that is 75 per cent funded by the UAE.
Ms Lopez urged MPs to “be heard loud and clear” and indicated that she would be sympathetic to some of the fears they had raised in the debate, which was triggered via an urgent question.
Conrad Black is a Canuck and he bought the Telegraph and Spectator. Doesnt that count ?
All just because they want it to be called the Daily Shariagraph and put Bryony Gordon in a burqa.
As I understand it, the brilliant new Commonwealth laws mean the abos own about 55% of Oz.
But oddly enough, they can’t build their own houses on this land, or even sell it to get their hands on some cash.
Each time I remember I voted yes that the Commonwealth could make special laws for abos, I realise I was even stupider than the last time I thought about it.
“put Bryony Gordon in a burqa”.
Maybe we shouldn’t be too hasty. (Particularly if they could be persuaded to add that “I intimidate men because of my ability to speak O level Italian” 50 something harridan).
Run that “foreign government” part past me again…
They can sell that worthless fearmongering rag to North Korea for all I care.
Who cares? It’s not like there’s still a dozen media outlets. The Arabs who were lucky enough to get together with their money want to buy it? Let them.
“Conrad Black is a Canuck and he bought the Telegraph and Spectator. Doesnt that count ?”
What? Are you really equating a Canadian who may have done a few dodgy things in his time with an authoritarian monarchy that lauded Putin on his recent visit?
UAE buys the paper. Policy changes, favouring Islam; Jewish, or Israel supporting, reporters and staff, ‘let go’; Sadiq Khan named National Man of the Year; all reports of Women’s sports banned; advertiser’s stop using the paper; sales fall; unions protest and go on strike; paper closes down, putting thousands out of work; the cost to the UAE is equivalent to petty cash and they feel no pain. Government ministers who supported the sale debt any responsibility. Did I leave something out?
deny, not debt. Bloody autocorrect.
deny, not debt. Bloody autocorrect.
Candidly you sgould yse grammerly
Flunkey : Oh mighty Conrad the Cruel, we have arranged the purchase of the mighty weapon the Eathlings call The Thunderer.
Conrad the Black : Mwahahah now nothing will stop me from becoming Emperor of the Universe.
Flunkey : We have captured the man who controls this weapon of ultimate destruction. He is called Bill Deedsh.
William Deedes : Shurely shome mishtake ? The Thunderer is the Timesh, you have bought a newshpaper called the Telegraph and a dull magashine called the Shpectator.
Conrad the Black pulls a handle and the Flunkey and Deedes fall into the Shark Tank.
Conrad picks up telephone : Boris the Brazen ? I have a job for you….
The BBC is owned by a foreign government.
The government is owned by a foreign multinational.

Byrony is apparently 43, according to Wikipedia. She must have had a hard life…
The Wiki entry was written in 2010. Like most of her columns.
@Simon Jester
John’s referring to Kate Mulvey. Tim Newman was a big fan of her work 🙂
