Labour’s plans will have a significant impact on parts of the media industry, which relies heavily on freelancers and other workers on precarious, short-term contracts.
As I’ve pointed out about California’s crack down upon gig work. It’s very, very, difficult to blank out zero hours contracts, legally, without also killing the entire basis of freelancing. Which is, of course, how large parts of the media work.
Folk might wake up to this at some point….for it isn’t that gig delivery and driving companies invented a new method of employment. Instead, they just picked up one that was lying around in the economy already – often and largely in media.
They killed the contracting industry with IR35, I don’t think that they will ever wake up, even when the economy lies in ruins about them.
Yup. IR35 contracting rates weren’t worth getting out of bed for, so I quit when my last IR35 exempt contract ended in December 2015.
That was one of the things that I was pleased about Liz Truss, they were promising to roll back the idiocy of IR35, but then the unpopular Indian midget overthrew her in his manufactured coup d’etat.
So I continue to remain economically inactive.
Not entirely true, I’ve managed to avoid inside-IR35 contracts without any problem.
That must be true for a large part of the IT contractor industry, or “Outside IR35” would not be featured prominently on every agency ad that qualifies. Any agency mailout that says “inside IR35” just goes into the digital round filing cabinet; I estimate possibly 10% of the ones I get are “inside IR35”.

I haven’t seen any. But then I stopped looking years ago, because it wasn’t worth the effort.

Fixed it for them.
There is no needings to be IR35ings when Rishi’s fragrant family business will sell you 5 Pajeets – each more surly and worthless than the last – for the price of a single competent British contractor.
You need to realize that California’s gig labor law very carefully exempted doctors and lawyers. Biden’s Labor Department just tried to implement it nationwide by bureaucratic fiat. It looks like that overreach will be shot down in court.
Nothing enrages a progressive more than someone finding a way around their beloved labor controls.
We’re about to lose all of our Uber and Lyft services for that same reason.
