Scottish football fans face hate crime complaints from members of the public who hear chants on TV at home, a senior lawyer has warned.
Police Scotland, which has already received 8,000 reports since the new laws came into force last week, is facing warnings that as many as 2,000 further complaints will be made on Sunday due to the Rangers vs Celtic clash at Ibrox.
Sectarian songs are often heard at Old Firm matches, raising fears that partisan supporters watching the game live on TV could swamp the force with new hate crime reports.
‘Tis an idiot law.
And, as I read it, physical presence – of the insult being made, or of the insultee – in Scotland is not necessary. It is, purely, that the supposed and felt to be insult is read or seen in Scotland.
An idiot law.
Swamping the jockfilth with frivolous complaints, given that they’ve promised to investigate every one received, is probably the quickest way to get this hateful law dropped even if not repealed yet.
Having to figure out which particular weegie in a sea of 50000 of them said the words heard on the broadcast should give them a bit of a problem, too.
Just put a black mark down against everyone who was there. Even if they didn’t sing the bad songs, their presence implies approval, which is pretty hateful.
It certainly is an “idiot law”… Pushed into being by a religious idiot who seems to be trying to introduce blasphemy laws by the backdoor… But only protecting one, specific religion.
’And, as I read it, physical presence – of the insult being made, or of thbe insultee – in Scotland is not necessary…’
Well, Scotplod seem to be making up the rules as they go along, having told someone reporting an antisemitic sign that she couldn’t complain as she herself wasn’t Jewish.
The “Scottish” Parliament is run by an ethnic Pakistani who dislikes Scots, so naturally he doesn’t want them to have any freedom of speech, in case they use it to ask why the “Scottish” Parliament is run by an ethnic Pakistani who dislikes Scots.
If the Scots don’t like him, they can vote for the other ethnic Pakistani who dislikes Scots.
It’s called Democracy, bigots. You can really smell the democracy coming off our institutions, just ignore the clouds of flies.
I assume that at least some Scots will have seen recent Liverpool vs ManU encounters. As I understand it, ManU supporters sing about the Italians murdered by Liverpool supporters at the Heysel stadium. Maybe about the innocent Liverpool supporters killed by their fellows at Hillsborough too. Meantime Liverpool supporters sing about the Munich air crash.
These are surely hate crimes in Scotland since they count as published in Scotland if broadcast there (or even clicked open on the web there). And there’s no time limitation on when the crime was committed.
This law is not only utterly malevolent but arse-achingly stupid.
As an Englishman, I have no doubt that I will be arrested for shouting “jings” or “crivens” as a hate crime for denigrating the Scotch language.

Such terms, as indeed my yesterday’s suggestion of McRozzers, are blatantly in contravention of the new law. If a be-kilted Interpol chopper starts hovering over the Worstall messuages we shall all three share some guilt.
Scot Lab has already said they won’t repeal this SNP, Green, LibDem & Labour law so enjoy the fun.
And does anyone seriously think the obvious stupidity, let alone threat to free speech will stop Starmer once he’s elected?
I’m thinking of recording several hate incidents involving O’Biden given his repeated criticisms of the British, aggravated by the fact that he’s a terrorist supporting Paddy.
if the US can enact various provisions with extra territorial jurisdiction, about time they got some payback

It won’t work to get it repealed. Because the plan is always to push until you receive pushback, back off a little, push again. Like a boa constrictor. Hence why they backed of Rowling – *this time*. They’ll find some ‘bright line’ offense and go for that, test the public response, and then rinse, repeat.
The ratchet only turns one way – to loosen it you have to break the ratchet.
