The triple ferret

The comedian Al Murray has suggested he could turn himself in to the police in anticipation of falling foul of Scotland’s new hate crime laws.

Murray, best known for his act featuring a politically incorrect pub landlord, fears the legislation could land him in trouble.

“This is a very interesting moment actually, that piece of legislation. To be honest, for comedians it is a wonderful opportunity to get yourself arrested and get written about. Or maybe next time I go to Scotland I should simply turn myself in,” he said.

So I’ll not get arrested, nor turn myself in presumptively, but will gain the publicity by talking about being arrested, talking about turning myself in presumptively.

The Triple Ferret in all its glory, Laydeez ‘s’ Gennelmen.

  1. “Murray, best known for his act featuring a politically incorrect pub landlord, ”

Is he known for anything else? Apart from the mandatory left-wing attention-seeking, that is.

  2. Sam, he has also written interesting works of history. Try “Command”, a study of UK generalship in WW2

  3. Diogenes:

I doubt if it will go on to an already massive reading list, but thanks for the correction!

  4. Tried to google “triple ferret”, came up empty – love the phrase, but can someone please explain its origin?

  5. I find the Pub Landlord incredibly unfunny.

Al Murray is better than that ( he was good with Harry Hill and had a funny sketch series a few years ago on telly ) and is a reasonable popular historian.

  6. Al Murray is better than that, he’s done loads of other stuff. I seem to remember him saying that his Landlord character was a minor creation that he used to fill in, but keeps getting rebooked. He must feel like Conan Doyle frustarted that all his detailed research on paranomalism is being sidelined in the face of demands for more Holmes.

  7. Pretty much every comment is on the nail. An upper middle-class Oxford educated lefty tosser who is admittedly an intermittently amusing comic actor. As mentioned above his Road to Berlin tv series was well written and intelligently presented. I was unaware of his historical writing but not surprised to hear it is rather good. He’s obviously not an idiot,

It’s therefore a shame, and something he will have to live with, that he felt it necessary to make a brief “look at me, aren’t I edgy” foray into politics by standing as a joke candidate against Farage in South Thanet. Thankfully this was greeted by the voters with richly deserved indifference. You’re not a “national treasure” matey, not even close.

  8. “upper middle-class Oxford educated lefty tosser” I never knew, nor care. Another case of a comic character created for the audience to laugh at, only to discover the audience laughing with.

  9. @djc… Indeed correct. On the same lines, I believe that the (very) left-wing Johnny Speight and Warren Mitchell were incensed to discover that people agreed with “Alf Garnet” and laughed with him rather than at his bigotry… 🙂

  10. Today’s factoid: Al Murray’s dad was a lieutenant colonel in 131 (Parachute) Regiment, Royal Engineers. We had occasion to contact him, as he’s the custodian of the historical records of the Royal Bucks Militia (King’s Own).

  11. Bloke in North Dorset

I’m not a fan but he has a very successful WW2 podcast (We have ways of making you talk), does a lot of history events and appears to be well respected in that community for his WW2 knowledge.

  12. Long before the Pub Landlord, he made an appearance on C4’s infamous TV show “The Word” doing some remarkably good renditions of the sound of various guns being loaded and fired. I have it on a video tape somewhere…
