The BBC breached its accuracy rules with a report on a transgender cat killer that failed to mention the murderer’s gender identity.
The broadcaster received complaints about how Scarlet Blake’s trans identity was not mentioned in an online article on Feb 23 and the BBC News at One three days later, on the day she was sentenced.
In a ruling, the BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) said it “considered that the omission of such information in the two instances specified by complainants, in a context where it had become material to an understanding of the case, amounted to a breach of the BBC’s standards of accuracy”.
We seem to have gone from deadnaming is a crime against all that is holy to not-deadnaming is not accurate reporting.
Was it deadnaming, or the omission that “Scarlet Blake” is a bloke and probably mental, that might have some relevance to his career as murderer and cat killer?
“… report on a transgender cat killer that failed to mention the murderer’s gender identity”
Just a minute – is this a murderer because of killing a cat, or were both a cat and a human killed?
Also what goes with what in “transgender cat killer”? Was a transgender cat killed? Or did the killer identify as a transgender cat? One assumes a transgender person killed a cat, but once we’re this deep in oddity, I don’t think that can be assumed.
(Sorry, I’m sure reading the article will explain it all, but it’s paywalled and the Telegraph is so left wing now it isn’t worth paying for any more)
Without a picture of the mangled blood-soaked pussy, I honestly don’t know what to believe.
@RT: Just turn off Javascript. The T’s “paywall” is that simple.
…….the omission of such information …………,in a context where it had become material to an understanding of the case, amounted to a breach of the BBC’s standards of accuracy
Now how about applying the same basic standards of accuracy to reports of robbery, violence, rape and murder carried by men of no appearance?
Mind you the same could be said even more pertinently about plod, particularly when the perpetrators of serious crime are still at large, making sure not to hurt the feelings of anyone from a minority irrespective of who else gets hurt in the meanwhile……………..,
Arthur
yes, turning off Java used to work on quite a few sites but they’ve now wised up – the Speccie for example
The Unpaywall app still works for the telegraph although you miss out on the comments which are often more amusing than the article.
’… a breach of the BBC’s standards of accuracy.’
Surely that should be ‘a breach of the BBC’s former standards of accuracy’?
“ Now how about applying the same basic standards of accuracy to reports of robbery, violence, rape and murder carried by men of no appearance?”
I see the attack in Sydney has been carried out by a MONA, at least as reported by the BBC. On the assumption that if it had been a white skinhead with Swastikas tattooed on his arms the report would have been all about far right terror I’m going with the attacker was screaming Allahu Akbar or something similar until told otherwise.
If the

B) You are dextrous ( and can be bothere, which for the Terriblegraph these days is not often )

Then you can paste it into Notepad or Word or something. Works best on a PC with a mouse. On a tablet it is trickier.
Bypass Paywall works on the DT and shows the comments too…
…mostly skip straight to the comments TBH.
No comments allowed on the Sydney Stabber obvs.
Which is why I’m better off using 9-GAG (a literal app for jokes) as my primary news source, because at least they post pics of the Sydney killer without censorship.
…and yes, looks like the usual Aloha Snackbar type.
The huge knife is an authentic touch I thought.

Alternatively, right click some of the visible text and select “Inspect”. Open the network tab of the developer tools then reload the page. Scroll back to the top of the network requests and click the first line, then “Preview”. You can now read the text of the article.
Probably doesn’t work on a tablet either, though.
Thanks to non-MSM sources we can see what they’d love to be able to hide about the Sydney attacker. Is anyone else sick and tired, like me, of hearing the phrase ‘known to police’ after these events?
They should give the coo who stepped up to terminate him the freedom of the city.
If any of the shoppers were carrying, then that baby might still have a mother. “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away”
My favourite line from the BBC was
“Leaping into action, Ms Hussainy grabbed her partner and hid in a changeroom”
Says a lot about the standard of journalists the BBC employs that this is their definition of courageous these days
The narrative has quickly been set for Sydney. Never mind the attacker, let’s all concentrate on “People who wear uniforms rush to danger”.
No disrespect to the lady and she certainly acquitted herself better than the collective cowards of Uvalde but she had a gun and Abdul didn’t. The outcome of bullet v blade confrontations was set out pretty clearly in the first Indiana Jones movie.
The BBC presenting eyewitness accounts by Rashdan Aqashah, Olinder Nemer, Huma Hussainy, and Mohamad Naveed to show what the peaceable just-like-us Muslim community have to put up with from these insane loners.
“When seconds count, the police are only minutes away” needs an update.
“When seconds count, the police are only a crime reference number away”
@Bloke in North Dorset – “I’m going with the attacker was screaming Allahu Akbar or something similar until told otherwise”
A textbook case of prejudice. Why not wait until you have facts before deciding?
@John Galt – “pics of the Sydney killer without censorship”
The Daily Mail is often quite a good source of pictures, even if their editorial position often leaves a bit to be desired. In this case see https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13305759/Joel-Cauchi-identified-Westfield-Bondi-junction-knife-killer-Horrific-new-details-emerge.html for multiple photos
@Bloke in Wales – “If any of the shoppers were carrying, then that baby might still have a mother.”
Because attackers never take any relevant circumstances into account and would have the same plan regardless. Why don’t we set up an experiment with another society in which there are routinely armed civilians and see how that affects the number and success of mass killings. Somewhere such as America. How is that working out for you?

There has also of course been the above attack in Sydney. One concludes from the article that the young bloke was a Moslem. Though they certainly don’t say so straight out.
The wicked and riotous response of the congregation is naturally wholeheartedly and repeatedly deplored by TPTB.
