How about the capital as modern-day Sodom? Polling shows Londoners are far more likely than other Britons to frown upon same-sex relationships and sex before marriage.
Largely because a large proportion of Londoners are not what would be, traditionally, described as traditional Britons.
A bit like a recent local election in the US. Can’t remember the State but I would guess Michigan or some such with a similar demographic. Over a few years, the ropers had allied themselves with the liberal, progressive, LGBT mob, then as soon as they were elected, tore down every symbol of LGBT rights, much to the consternation of said mob. Ha Ha Ha.
The same is happening here with the ‘Queers for palestine’ morons.
What a dreadful article! Maybe not as evil as Murphy but so terribly smug that you want to punch the author in the face, or better still send him to the West Bank where he can see:
‘ That’s where the future of the city is being reimagined and remade’
Not sure it’ll match his vision mind you…
Polling shows Londoners are far more likely than other Britons to frown upon same-sex relationships, sex before marriage, apostasy, blasphemy and Jews.

’I am that increasingly rare thing – an aboriginal Londoner.’
Cor blimey, strike a light, guvner!
@Addolff – yes, indeed, you’re thinking of Hamtramck, Michigan, an independent city that’s actually an enclave entirely within the city of Detroit.

A good job London is relatively light on tall buildings for such a large city.
That “frown” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.
’I am that increasingly rare thing – an aboriginal Londoner????’
I am that increasingly common thing – a Londoner who’s the son of colonists.
There, FTFY.
“Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner that I love the sound of a didgeridoo.”
“If you want exposure to new cultures and new ideas, go to the fringes of the city. They are now the natural home of the money-transfer dens, the sim-card shops, the community restaurants.”
I don’t, though, Aditya, because most of the new cultures and new ideas seem to me to be shittily retrogressive and unpleasant.
@Adolff
As Llamas pointed out, it was indeed Hamtramck. Once in power, the Muslim council promptly banned pride flags from being flown on council buildings.
” “There’s a sense of betrayal,” said the former Hamtramck mayor Karen Majewski, who is Polish American. “We supported you when you were threatened, and now our rights are threatened, and you’re the one doing the threatening.””
Were the Muslims contrite?
“Muslim residents packing city hall erupted in cheers after the council’s unanimous vote, and on Hamtramck’s social media pages, the taunting has been relentless: “Fagless City”, read one post.”
Apparently not.
the natural home of the money-transfer dens, the sim-card shops, the community restaurants.
Ah yes, these marvellous empowerers of tax evasion, terrorist funding and e.coli.
The proliferation of the above is a good sign you’ve wandered into the wrong postcode.
‘I am that increasingly rare thing – an aboriginal Londoner.’
Yeah, I remember the Ango-Saxon Chronicals, Alfred, Aefleda, Ethelred, Egbert, Oswald, …. Aditya.
I see that he has a go at describing Douglas murray as a bigot – which he is not, sneering about him going to eton (as if he had a choice ) . At least DM can write articles that are not distorted by his hatred of one group ( tories) nor skewed by the need to find racism in everything. DM is a joy to read. AC not so much. Despite his paean to London and it’s wonderful diversity, to many of us in the rest of the country it remains a shithole best avoided if at all possible.
Sam Vara,
“I don’t, though, Aditya, because most of the new cultures and new ideas seem to me to be shittily retrogressive and unpleasant.”
The fringes of London are absolutely godawful. No, there aren’t new ideas and new cultures there. They’re full of the service workers of London. People who do basic admin jobs in London, work as cab drivers, cosplay as yeoman warders but can’t afford to live in the city itself.
If you’re an idea/culture person, there is no reason to live there. Idea/culture people need large numbers of days in a room with a canvas, Protools, a laptop whatever, and the odd trip to London. Sting can do most of his work from near Salisbury. Alan Moore still lives in Northampton. Dyson are out in Malmesbury. Aardman make their movies in Bristol.
The only idea people in London are the people who got so rich they can afford a nice place.
Western Bloke
Of the many places I have lived in the UK the one I have revisited the least is Alperton – Couldn’t agree more with your assessment – the primary culture would have been in uncleaned out fridges in the council estates. Beyond a possible Jihad and considerable crack cocaine fuelled gang activity (pitched battles on the Wembley High Road between Asians and Somalis) I couldn’t see much coming out of there. Enfield (I think he lives in Ponders End) is a bit leafier for sure but was not exactly a cultural hotspot either…
Ponders End was never the leafier part of Enfield (I went to school there) but 50+ years ago it was not a third-world shithole, it is now.
Regarding Hamtramck, interesting to note that the predominant ethnicity is not Arab/Middle Eastern (as it is in Dearborn to the West), but rather, Muslims from the Indian sub-continent – Bengal, Bangla Desh and like that. I thought that those folks were (relatively) somewhat- more-tolerant of the LGBT+, but apparently religion trumps ethnicity.
As far as “Were the Muslims contrite?” – No. Why would they be? There’s no ambiguity about what’s preached about these subjects in the mosque every day, and the Koran is crystal-clear on the matter. The Muslims have nothing to be contrite about. The fault lies 100% with those who chose not to take them at their word.

And – to be fair – when I do go down that way, which is very seldom, Hamtramck is an island of semi-normality in the midst of the depraved s**t-show that is the city of Detroit. There are actual leafy suburban streets of well-maintained houses with carefully-trimmed lawns, and thriving commercial blocks. It ain’t perfect, not by a long shot, but compared to the urban hellscapes of Detroit, just a few blocks away, it ain’t doing too bad.

Ponders End? It was a ghastly place when I was a kid. I seem to remember it’s most salient feature was a gasometer. These days it’s an enormous patch of industrial estates.
“Who was Ponder, and what was the manner of his end?” (I’m sure that’s a quotation from some blighter or other, but I can’t recall whom.)

Wiki says it was recorded in 1593 as Ponders ende meaning the “end or quarter of the parish associated with the Ponder family” from the Middle English ende.
What the hell is an “aboriginal Londoner”….?
Aboriginal, fine.. Them’s the Darkies in Oz. Been around for a bit there, roughly from when Doggerland became the Doggerbank over here.
Any putatively dark skin here in Europe disappeared around that time, only to reappear in any number with Imports from the Empire around early 20thC on.
5-6 generations at best….
That’s not aboriginal, that’s at best a local accident.
Thanks, BB!
@Andrew C,
Isn’t the aim of the smoking legislation to make everywhere in the UK ‘fagless’ eventually?
