Can these people even think?

about letting trans people use the single-sex spaces appropriate to their gender.

Sex and gender are different things, no?

  1. Transwomen are stupid – throw rocks at them.

Re Carrie – does it, I wonder, sit down to piss?

  2. Trans without knowing it – reported in the South China Morning Post:

Shock as about-to-marry China woman discovers she is biological man after doctors find testicle in her stomach
Woman, 27, looks forward to wedding, decides to have medical check-up
Doctor finds rare disorder, male sex chromosomes, but female hormones.

After 27 years living life as a female, the shock examination of a woman in China has revealed a testicle in her abdomen, meaning that biologically she is a male. Li Yuan, from central China’s Hubei province, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, had been concerned about not menstruating and delayed breast development since puberty.
It was not until recently, when Li was planning her wedding that she decided to undergo a thorough examination. After a month’s anxious wait for the results of tests, the doctor’s judgment was confirmed.
Li had male sex chromosomes, but looks female.

“…does it, I wonder, sit down to piss?”

Interestingly, my daughter (now 37) had to learn to sit down to piss. It didn’t come naturally to her when 2yo.

  4. Androgen insensitivity. Well known and not wholly rare either. In the absence of testosterone a body will develop female – even with testes sitting where ovaries should be. And the testes could be producing testosterone too, but if the genetic switch to recognise it turned off via mutation then the body will develop female even with testes where the ovaries should be.

    Weird, but does happen.

  5. It is shameful that blokes in frocks who get their kicks hanging around in ladies toilets or beating real women in sporting events should hitch their unlovely wagons to the likes of the unfortunate Chinese lady with the nut and a tiny handful of comparable cases.

It would be easy to simply redefine “single sex” spaces. Spaces like the spaces Americans call bathrooms.

“Bathroom for people with a penis”
“Bathroom for people without a penis”

Barring the 0.05% of congenitally uncertain cases, who will have the same problems as before, that covers everyone.

For the 0.0001% of “trans” persons, you use the space matching your genital configuration at birth, unless this has been surgically altered.

It’s maybe as unfortunate as wording like “birthing parent” or “cervix owner” but it does sort the immediate problem.

So Loretta Bobbit gets a choice of either!

What about the eunuchs? Do they qualify for that category or should it be modified to “people who have never had a penis”?

    Tim,

it does rather make the choice to switch bathrooms irreversible.

This is in contrast to current German law whereby you can self-declare changes at will to the local authorities. Though only once a year. This is surely discriminatory against certain publicity-seeking senior managers of management consultancies, who have a regular schedule of which days they are male, and which female.

    asiaseen,

The whole point of the suggestion is to simplify things. Hopefully eunuchs and castrati are sufficiently rare these days, at least outside the Bangkok red light district, to not pester anyone unduly.

Couldn’t we just shorten that to Male and Female, I’m sure there’s an environmental impact to printing longer signs

  11. >”Sex and gender are different things, no?”

When its necessary to them for them to be different things. They are the same thing when its necessary to them. They are whatever they need to be to gain and hold power. Its doublethink.

“. . .to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, . . . to use logic against logic, . . . to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again . . . “

Castration removes the testicle, not the penis.

  13. Ag – Not always, historically:

In China, castration included removal of the penis as well as the testicles (see emasculation). Both organs were cut off with a knife at the same time.

But to be fair, they were civil servants.

Don’t really follow the logic there. Biting off & swallowing people’s nuts* make her male? Abdomen a bit further down, maybe?

*And brings new meaning to the question “She spit or swallow?”

  15. There was a brief late ‘80s / early ‘90s fashion for the sort of ‘country pubs’ that serve over-priced food to pretentious yuppies to use pictures of dogs to distinguish their looks – a pointer and a setter.

  16. I read an item some time ago with pics of the variety of signs used to distinguish bogs. It might even have been linked here? XX and XY was the one I liked. I wonder if there is anywhere that uses “L’Origine du Monde” on the Ladies and a painting of a suitably prominent member on the Gents.
