No wonder we’re fucked

Man builds 10ft-wide house to spite nimby neighbours — take a look inside
The skinny home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is on sale for $619,000 after its builders went to great lengths (but not widths) to adhere to strict zoning laws

Teeny, tiny, house etc etc etc.

The home, measuring 10ft across by 80ft deep,

On two floors – and so that’s twice the size of the average UK new build.

  1. $400 per square foot doesn’t seem excessive. A very nice weekend/vacation home for someone.

    Here’s how it happened:-

When the Williams Coastal Heights area of South Jacksonville Beach was first platted in the 1920s, all the parcels were narrow, just 25 feet wide. Many lots were sold together, so homes were built on two or three lots combined, a trend that continues to this day.
Somehow along the way, a sliver of land in the 1900 block of Horn Street was left behind. That long, slender bit of property — 25 feet by 140 feet — provided just the opportunity that builder John Atkins and real estate broker Ryan Wetherhold were seeking

  2. Ten feet across? My house is a bog standard terrace and is 12 feet across, 45 feet front to back, with a standard 6ftx10ft offshot.

  3. My first house, an early 19th century terrace squashed into a courtyard off a back street, was 10′ 3″ wide internally, which was bloody annoying when I was re- flooring the top floor and the floorboards came in 10′ lengths.

  4. “all the parcels were narrow, just 25 feet wide”

Presumably the 10-foot wise house is to comply with distance from the next house or distance from the boundary rules

  5. Sometimes known as a “Spite house”.

There’s one in San Francisco that’s also 10 feet wide built to block the neighbour’s light.
