The Guardian view on Europe’s imperilled green deal: time to outflank the radical right
Editorial
The voters have spoken but fuck them, harder and faster we go!
The burden of transition on economically insecure voters must be eased via a more ambitious fiscal approach by governments
More tax, Yay!
Ah yes, it’s the old
The Tories have won, but they need to govern for the entire nation and do left wing things.
Labour have won, Tories need to accept this and support the majority while they do left wing things.
Because climate issues are largely a middle class obsession, what the proles actually want cuts no melted ice with a publication read by the middle class public sector employees who really run things.
Sooner or later (and we’ve already seen it mentioned here) the blob will be suggesting ways to improve ( preserve, revitalise, whatever) democracy. Every last suggestion will have the aim of suppressing the vote of anybody not on board with the blob.
The guardian’s nightmare:
A better and more nightmarish alternative is one where the EU abandons net zero targets and recognises that it has no global responsibilities.
time to outflank the radical right?
They ain’t seen nuffin yet. The lesson from Europe is the UK is going to see a rise on the hard right. Expect to see the EDL membership mushroom. (Except no doubt Starmer will make it an illegal organisation, so it goes underground & supercharges)

IMHO a better idea is simply to abandon “net zero” targets because it’s not going to make the slightest fucking difference to the weather and will massively immiserate the majority of the developed world’s population.
Funny how they went from “the Green sh*t will make you better off” to “how come they don’t like being poorer”.
The new European Commission, which will most probably be led once again by Ms von der Leyen, will be responsible for legislating a path to a 90% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This will involve transformation in areas such as housing and transport, and have a direct impact on everyday lives
Lol, you’re going to be killed and eaten in the food riots.
And although action to mitigate the climate emergency remains a priority for voters across the continent, economic insecurity is at the forefront of their minds. In the context of that anxiety, a false opposition between pro-green and pro-growth policies has begun to gain rhetorical ground.
The entirety of the Green movement has been signalling a move away from ‘economic growth’ as a measure of prosperity – this sits entirely opposed to human nature and is a very tough sell. I was outlining this to my niece, who is related to my relative who is a collaborator of Richard Murphy and the revelation that she would not be allowed independent travel or to travel abroad sent her into a panic attack to the point where said relative told me to ‘be quiet’ – he is a lifelong Green party supporter apparently unwilling to face the reality of what his party stands for. There is no compromise here. The idea is Foreign travel will be severely restricted. If that isn’t a ‘true opposition’ hard to know what is.
The combined leverage of progressive forces in the new European parliament remains considerable. It should be used to change the terms of engagement with the radical right and its fellow travellers. A much bigger European budget, combined with joint borrowing to finance gamechanging investment, would allow the green deal to become a visible catalyst for economic growth.
‘We’ve been responsible for reforms that will severely restrict your ability to eat and make you far poorer than your immediate forebears for the last century. We also have superior schooling, pensions you cannot obtain by any means and are completely bombproof in our exemption to the rules we are looking to impose on you. Please vote for us and we will take more money from you’
Might be a winning message in Murphy’s world but in the real one it’s a hard sell…
@VP
Anything’s a winning message when you control the vote-counting.
I was outlining this to my niece … and the revelation that she would not be allowed independent travel or to travel abroad sent her into a panic attack …
The usual response is to insist that you’re lying. You must have immense explanatory skills if you’ve managed to get her past that point.
