Hmm

There is an obsession amongst politicians and Silicon Valley for tech-led growth, which seems to be intimately related to far right thinking.

Yes, OK. Given what Spud regards as far right thinking.

Technological growth comes from market processes. That as rapid as possible exploration of the technological envelope. Thus, if you want technological led growth you’re going to be in favour of market proicesses – far right that is.

Whether that’s a bad idea or not is another thing of course.

Is growth that is undoubtedly dependent on trashing the planet worth having?

One possible definition of technological growth is being able to achieve the same result with less resource use…..

Is he yet to fall out with the green party? Do they get to nominate vermine?

  2. If we didn’t have that growth, MY leisure time would be trashed.

So yes. We really need it!!!

  3. Never mind the resources, the it-outage should surely put the brakes on technological progress. One man yesterday couldn’t open his Internet-enabled fridge!

  4. I see his point… The old USSR was such a paragon of eco-awareness and care for the environment after all.

  5. “There are better cameras and lenses than we have. The same is true of microphones. But what we have is very good, and that is good enough. What is more, if we need a second camera (and we think we will, simply to extend recording times, if nothing else, because mirrorless cameras have a habit of overheating) then the second camera may not need to be as fully specced as the main one.”

Ok. Sometimes tech is good enough.

“What has this to do with that outage? It is simply that by pushing things to the limit they can more easily go wrong.”

But here’s the thing… the use of clouds or managed services like cloudstrike don’t mean that things more easily go wrong. It’s just that an outage is a more concentrated event. Hundreds of companies lose their website, all at the same time.

And that becomes a lot more newsworthy than those companies having more problems but across 200 days.

And these services are about specialisation. Cloudstrike have a load of guys spending all day thinking about potential threats. So you don’t have to worry. Same as how I use azure because I don’t want to run my own server room.

  6. Is growth that is undoubtedly dependent on trashing the planet worth having?

If it makes just one Greenie cry, spaz out, and run to play in M25 traffic, then yes.

  7. “But is that whole logic pushing us all in the wrong direction, and not just politically? Is growth that is undoubtedly dependent on trashing the planet worth having? Or is there something else that is ‘good enough’ that would actually be much better for us?

It is a question worth asking.”

No Richards it is emphatically NOT a question worth asking, except perhaps for the sycophantic fluffers that you preach to.

  8. And yet building millions of EVs, the electrical infrastructure to support them and acres of bird mincers is sustainable?

Trashing the planet to possibly reduce Co2 emissions (aka plant food) is A Good Thing?

  9. starfish – is handing out over a million visas to Third World migrants sustainable?

Net Zero caps the maximum standard of living British people are allowed to enjoy.

Mass immigration means that maximum standard of living is divided across all the unwanted newcomers and their benefits-seeking relatives.

Total CO2 emissions go up, average living standards go down in a Net Zero system. It’s like a prison with a fixed number of cells, and a governor determined to cram as many lags in as possible.

There is an obsession amongst politicians and Silicon Valley for tech-led growth, which seems to be intimately related to far right thinking.

Which is why Silicon Valley is located in that noted bastion of far right thinking… California.

Which is lead by that noted far right governor… Gavin Newsom.

And notable right wing tech leaders such as Gates, Zuckerberg, Dorsey, etc. give large piles of cash to the party of the far right… The Democrats.

  11. And just a couple of days ago Putin gave a speech blaming cryptocurrency mining for the blackouts southern Russia is currently experiencing thanks to successful Ukrainian drone strikes on sub-stations.

It’s amusing how often the concerns of Corbynism and the Kremlin happen to coincide.

Steve: «I wear Cor Blimey trousers.»

And if you live in a council flat, you’re the ghost of Bob Crow (unless there’s currently a work to rule by ectoplasm operatives, obvs).
