And as if by magic multi vaxxed Biden comes down with Covid 19! Not that he and his staff, security, are bothered enough to wear masks as a security measure even though he mandated them for the plebs…….
So, who will the Dems put forward as a replacement?
I think the price for him stepping down is Hunter not going to jail and the Biden family not being investigated.
They’ve either had a quiet word with him, and he’s agreed to take a sickie. Or they haven’t had a quiet word with him, and he’s so sick he’ll conveniently die or be incapacitated.
As JuliaM says, the bigger question is about his replacement. The activity behind the scenes must be frantic.
Ok, I’ll freely admit this is a nutcase conspiracy theory, but perhaps they’ve decided they can be pretty blatant about fixing the election and who cares about the consequences?
“Biden says he’d quit race if doctors told him to”
Should read: “Biden says he’d quit race if ‘Doctor’ Jill told him to”.
I think dementia is associated with massively increased risk of severe illness if infected with covid, influenza or the man killer pneumonia. Joe is going to have a hard time probably. I wish him recovery and several years happy and healthy retirement.
Julia,
One suggestion I’ve seen is Harris, because the black vote is still behind Biden, with Gretchen Whitmer as her running mate.
Apparently they think this will be appealing to the centre ground since Vance was appointed.
One gathers America’s combination of Hercules & Plato has cancelled a forthcoming speech due to having tested positive for Covid.
Mr Biden said in Wednesday’s interview that he had previously hoped to “move on” from politics,
To what? The afterlife?
One suspects the US centre ground is roughly where Vance is so shrewd move by the Orange Man.
Still plenty of time for currently blue swing states to implement “precautionary” measures and legislation before November.
We have ways of replacing the PM, or establishing a regency.
The US has the 25th Amendment.
Which they haven’t invoked, despite the obvious.
Joe still has 6 months to run, so if Dr Jill decides he’s too gaga Kamala automatically steps up.
And she’s even less popular.
Who’d want to be Dem VP on a losing ticket? Better to wait for 2028 if you have realistic ambitions.
Who has been running USA for the last few years? An unelected cabal of nincompoops. It’s hilarious, and a little bit frightening.
The pressing question is not how poorly Biden’s health is now, it’s what on earth he’s going to be like in 2028.
Depends how good the embalmers are Mr Womby. Their work seems to be holding up so far.
Sort of connected. I won’t bother linking to the article since it’s bollocks but one of the usual opinion formers in the Torygraph.
JD Vance as Trump’s running mate is the death knell of American conservatism
And where would American conservatism be today if it didn’t have Trump running for Pres? Is there still such a thing as “American conservatism” at the party level? Anyone American conservative voters would actually elect, other than?
BiS – JD Vance as Trump’s running mate is the death knell of American conservatism
Good. Pour concrete in the grave.
Vance is not merely an advocate of a more restrained foreign policy, he’s a demagogue plagued by a single minded obsession: rewarding Putin for waging a bloody, unprovoked war on Ukraine.
Not wanting to keep pouring tens of billions of dollars into a losing proxy war that has already killed off most middle aged Ukrainian blokes makes you a demagogue who is “obsessed”.
Commando Comics Warspunkers who let Putin live rent-free in their heads aren’t obsessed tho:
In the Senate, Vance has identified denying Ukraine further military aid as his second biggest priority while smearing those colleagues who don’t share his view.
It’s “dishonest” and “incomprehensible” to note that Ukraine is the most corrupt country in Europe and much of our aid is being stolen:
“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelensky’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht,” suggested Vance in one especially dishonest – and frankly incomprehensible – moment.
Sometimes, dead is better:
With Trump and Vance cemented as American “conservatism’s” frontmen for the foreseeable future, it is no exaggeration to say that the values – and the spirit – of the conservative movement shaped by Buckley and Reagan are functionally dormant, if not dead.
Buckley was a closeted homosexual CIA asset and Reagan was easily tricked into letting mass immigration degrade his country. They’re both dead and, thankfully, so are their politics.
Couple of things:
1) My own take is this: Until James Clyburn and the Congressional Black Caucus abandon Biden, he will remain in the race. They are still backing Biden.
2) JD Vance is young, vigorous and articulate. He also a pair of brass ones. He’s the perfect match for Trump. He isn’t a squish. Given his background he will appeal to middle American voters in battleground states while at the same time having some sway amongst the entrepreneurial elite. He will run circles around Kamala Harris.
3) The realistic alternative to Biden is Harris, and she’s a loser. Even blacks loathe her. She would not step aside gracefully, and if she is boxed out you will see a full scale rebellion by the Congressional Black Congress.
4) Gavin Newsome of California is box office poison. He is on the wrong side of every issue, and what California has become is absolutely loathed by a huge part of the electorate.
5) Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan looks like she came from central casting to audition for the Wicked Witch of the West, and her record of backing Muslims to the hilt will not serve her well outside of Michigan (and perhaps Minnesota).
6) The Democrat National Convention is going to be a disaster. Period. You’ll have either a convention fight about replacing Biden, or massive, violent demonstrations. Or both. Even if there isn’t a fight or the demonstrations don’t materialize, you still have either Joe Biden or Kamala Harris in front of a podium on prime time television. That is, in and of itself, disastrous.
At this point, I don’t think there is anything that can get the Democrats to victory in November.
“It’s not who votes that counts, it’s who counts the votes.”
Dennis – what about Cackles Rodham Clinton?
It was her turn dammit!
I can’t say I agree with Steve’s analysis but this shows how profoundly thick a British journalist can be: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/17/the-true-terrifying-reason-boris-johnson-met-donald-trump/
No doubt inspired by by terminal TDS but really!
For a start both Trump & now Vance are adopting positions will get them elected. Not necessarily what they’re positions will be if elected. That’s politics.
I doubt if either Trump or Vance are in favour of Russian aggressive expansionism. Quite the opposite. But nor do they see why the USofA should be picking up the vast majority of the tab from protecting Europe from it whilst Europols spend they’re tax money on baubles to make themselves look good to their own electorates. So he/they do exactly what I would do in the situation. Give them the shits that he’ll pull out of NATO & leave the Eurocreeps to their own devices. Really, the Yanks don’t need allies like this. Especially when so many are volubly expressing their own TDS symptoms to influence the US elections. How else is he going to achieve what is good for America? I suspect the same applies to China.
Like I’ve said before, Trump’s a poker player & a good one. Not tiddlywinks or the feckin Eton Wall Game..
I had £100 on Big Mike when s/he was 40-1 a few months back. Not impossible.
It’s “dishonest” and “incomprehensible” to note that Ukraine is the most corrupt country in Europe and much of our aid is being stolen:
Steve. I doubt Ukraine is even amongst the runners up.
Dennis – what about Cackles Rodham Clinton?

Hillary is a benign tumor at this point… She won’t go away but she also isn’t doing much of anything.
The Democrat Establishment will never forgive her for losing to Trump. She had her chance and she blew it. Plus she’s about 100 years old and has Parkinson’s Disease. Replacing one feeble geezer with a different feeble geezer isn’t exactly a clear path to victory.
I doubt Ukraine is even amongst the runners up.
Irrespective, it’s close enough to the top to be noteworthy.
BiS – Amid all the pressure to root out corruption, I assumed, perhaps naively, that officials in Ukraine would think twice before taking a bribe or pocketing state funds. But when I made this point to a top presidential adviser in early October, he asked me to turn off my audio recorder so he could speak more freely. “Simon, you’re mistaken,” he says. “People are stealing like there’s no tomorrow.”
BiS – Colonel Hamish Stephen de Bretton-Gordon OBE says:
The announcement of the UK Strategic Defence Review is welcome, but in the face of the Trump/Vance pact to leave Europe to Putin, by the time the report drops sometime next year, we could already be in direct armed confrontation with the Russians.
“We”, eh?
As Keir Starmer delivers his King’s Speech today, the honeymoon period of his thumping victory at the polls is well and truly over. He may only have until November to prepare this country for direct conflict with Russia
I’m sure young British men will sign up in droves to defend our important national values such as sodomy and infinite brown immigration, lol.
Colonel Hamish Stephen de Bretton-Gordon OBE says:
Toy soldier talking his own book.
Doesn’t mean there’s not a dangerous situation. But the only thing I’d rely on less than the British officer class is the British political class. You’re quoting public sector management. Like hanging on the words of the Chief Constable of the Met.
OT. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2024/07/18/logan-balding-bbc-olympics-limited-by-french-employment-law/
Gabby Logan and Clare Balding to have BBC Olympics coverage limited by French employment law
Ha-ha-ha-he-he-he-ho-ho-ho… ROTFLMAO
Don’t suppose it’ll make the slightest difference to what they’re being paid though.
BiS – But the only thing I’d rely on less than the British officer class is the British political class.
There’s no difference anymore, but our army orifices certainly talk a great game for people who haven’t won a war since 1982.
I suppose hacks will be too squeamish to write about the political assassination of Joe Biden. Or maybe not.
“Vance as Trump’s running mate is the death knell of American conservatism”
I don’t think it is. Vance is a red-blooded conservative. But it is the end of it making any sense for free market liberals to ally with conservatives. Unfortunately the left aren’t any better, so we’re on our own.
Vance is an interesting idk though. He’s mini-Trump (or actually even more extreme), so he’s not appealing to any group outside MAGA. Which means Trump’s decided he’s won and doesn’t need to make any attempt to broaden his base, so he’s thinking of what happens afterwards.
Sorry, ‘pick’ not ‘idk’.
“Like hanging on the words of the Chief Constable of the Met.”
“Why are you moaning, it was only a brasilian!” ?
And yes, hanging was appropriate, but alas, not done.

Wrong on all fronts. Murphy-esque levels of wrong. Kind of impressive, in a way.

I don’t know much about the guy, but he seems to be a popular Ohio senator and Trump needs to win the Rust Belt.
As for free trade, it died a strange bi-partisan death. American pols don’t want free trade, they want tariffs and sanctions, and ultimately war
I like Harris, Newsom, and Whitmer. They all seem moderate sensible people with charisma.
Trump needs to lose.

I think 40-1 is excellent odds…

Do you like Big Mike? They got a chance? What do you think?

This is good content.
In other Trump news, His Winningness now has the endorsement of 50 Cent (who photoshopped Donald Trump’s head onto his own body and displayed it at a rap concert in tribute to the President.)
Where Fiddy goes, there goes America.
Dennis, Your Guide To The USA said:

Interesting. What are you seeing as different?
They seem to have pretty similar views on international issues – protectionist on trade, anti-war in Ukraine, pro-wall on immigration, pro-Israel, anti-China.
Domestically they’re both sceptical about environmentalism, pro 2nd amendment, are against big cuts to social security or Medicare, and see the Federal civil service (the “swamp”) as a major problem.
Both say abortion should be left to the individual States (Vance’s instincts are more total ban, but he’s rowed back on that).
They both seem to focus their main appeal on male blue-collar workers (wider support than that of course, but that’s where the rhetoric seems to be aimed).
Personally they both present themselves as self-made (although Vance is a lot more convincing on that). Trump’s wife is 1st generation immigrant, Vance’s 2nd gen, so neither has the traditional political American spouse.
Trump’s instincts are socially liberal in ways that Vance’s aren’t, and Vance seems much more of a Christian than Trump does (and is very much only married once), but I don’t see much of that translating into their actual policies.
So what have I missed? What are you seeing as the big differences between them, that haven’t made it over this side of the pond?

If JD Vance (why doesn’t he just go with Jim?) is that much of a Christian, why is his wife a Hindu?
None of my wives are Hindus.
Steve said:
“If JD Vance is that much of a Christian, why is his wife a Hindu?”
His serious Christianity came later.
He seems to have largely abandoned his childhood evangelical Christianity by the time he’d married, but only took religion seriously again when he became a Catholic some years afterwards.
RichardT – As they say, life is full of Hindus and Hindon’ts.
I’m sure young British men will sign up in droves to defend our important national values such as sodomy and infinite brown immigration, lol.
From the looks of Leeds, we’ll be too busy fighting in our own streets to be fighting Russia…
Having looked at the videos, I didn’t see “we” fighting. Not saying the police being thoroughly enriched overly bothers me. They’re hardly on our side.
Not ‘we’ tonight.
I meant in the future.
Oh I’ve little doubt your “we” will be fighting. But not with the Russians. I wouldn’t give good odds of you winning, either.
I did like this quote: they would not be surprised if the 81-year-old made a speech endorsing Kamala Harris, the vice president, as his successor, the New York Times reports. Put me in mind of a novel had “the Black Spot” in it. Although one could interpret that in different ways, I s’pose.
What are you seeing as different?
The content of your first post and the content of your second.
So what have I missed?
1) There is no indication that Trump thinks the election is won. None. And his choosing Vance over Burgum and Rubio constitutes proof of that. Trump has not taken the rustbelt states for granted.
2) Vance will a huge asset in the battleground rustbelt states and in the South. Not in the Democrat controlled major cities, mind you, but everywhere else. His appeal is to rural, smaller city and to an extent suburban voters. That’s how he won his senate seat in Ohio.
I am about 50/50 on whether the Dems or the Deep State or Soros et al were involved in the Trump whack attempt, but if they were they might be given pause by thinking the Vance will be taking over. Seems a fair chance that if Trumps gets it before November Vance will go forward with Vivek as his VP.
