A handful of wealthy polluting countries led by the US are spending billions of dollars of public money on unproven climate solutions technologies that risk further delaying the transition away from fossil fuels, new analysis suggests.
Throwing money at potential solutions to society’s biggest long term problem is bad d’ye see? Bad when it’s being thrown at things that might allow fossil fuels – or hey, even capitalism! – to continue.
Because for some at least not allowing capitalism to continue is the point….
potential solutions to society’s biggest long term problem
Trolling your regulars, Tim? Ignoring the assumption in the second half of that sentence, the green loons are entirely correct here. Both CC&S and ‘blue’ hydrogen are a total waste of time and money, especially money extorted from the poor bloody taxpayer. This applies regardless of your views on global warming.
It’s tough to decide which tech is the most ridiculous, but I’d have to go with blue hydrogen; expensive to produce and generates more emissions than just burning the gas. Although CC&S is superficially attractive, so there will be more money wasted on it.
Around 201 on the BBC’s last remaining objective programs, Analysis, did a program on the Green movement. They talked to a woman who organised conferences for Greenies and she talked about those attending with some clarity.
She made the point that if she stood up at the front and said that she had a magic wand that suspended the laws of physics and CO2 was no longer a greenhouse gas and asked the audience if she should wave it she reckoned at most 10% would say yes.
We may have a climate problem, but there’s no climate crisis. (Even the IPCC regards the catastrophic scenarios as highly unlikely. Meanwhile, surface sea temperatures in the Atlantic and Pacific have fallen this year.) And there are other more pressing problems, eg antibiotic resistant bacteria; but these are not opportunities for the leftist termites to gnaw at the foundations of the West.
The United States and other governments have little to show for these massive investments in carbon capture – none of the demonstration projects have lived up to their initial hype,” said Robert Howarth, professor of ecology and environmental biology at Cornell University. “It is instructive that industry itself invests very little in carbon capture. This whole enterprise is dependent on government handouts.”
Coming up with expensive Heath Robinson schemes to bury a useful trace grass underground is dependent on government handouts, said the tax-suckling parasite.
With time running out to curtail climate catastrophe
Let’s burn tyres.
critics of CCS and hydrogen say public money should be focused on proven, less risky solutions such as
The 40,000 additional wind turbines we’d need to replace gas-fired electricity.
As opposed to spending trillions of dollars of public money on unproven “green energy” technologies.
We – or rather nature – already do carbon capture and storage.
Marine snow – those creatures that die and aren’t eaten before they reach the bottom of the oceans – falls at the rate of about a millimetre a year. It’s mostly calcium carbonate, i.e. lots of carbon.
Doesn’t sound much. But over 193 million square miles of ocean it’s significant, In a thousand years a metre builds up. In a million 1,000 metres. In a billion, you get Arabia, the White Cliffs of Dover, etc.
That’s why the CO2 in the atmosphere has declined from about 30% to a piffling 0.04%.
The process would inexorably continue until the extinction of all life on earth if we didn’t reverse it by burning fossil fuels.
I often wonder why the West is so enthusiastic at being stupid with idiot climate policies….Europeans make up about 12% of the world’s population the other 88% are not really interested. Same goes for illegal immigrants. Not a lot head for Japan,China, India.

They only have a limited time left to loot the remaining wealth before societal collapse into cold South Africa.
That’s why the accelerator pedal is jammed down on Infinity Immigration, Infinity Debt, and Forever War. Londonistan won’t be playing at being a world power for much longer.

“he United States and other governments have little to show for these massive investments in carbon capture – none of the demonstration projects have lived up to their initial hype,”
Pile o money theory confirmed again. The projects certainly achieved their goal, plundering a pile of OPM. That is all they were meant to do. Success would spoil the scam by not requiring a further project.
@Dave Ward – ta. Luckily, the emissions from green hydrogen don’t matter as it costs so much to produce and (as noted by the report mentioned in that article) is such a pain in the arse to use that it’s never going to happen. The UK and other governments occasionally blather about it, but that’s it.
Every time the eco-loons debunk another bit of ‘green tech’ they are coming closer to making an open confession that what they really want is a) for 90% of us to die and b) for the rest to live in caves and eat dung. Hopefully this will all be out in the open so we can shoot them in the face and get on with life.

I’d say it’s far worse than that. There’s a good living to be made out of being an environmental activist. And that is their prime incentive. Them making money now. The don’t give a flying f**k about your future. And that’s been true right back to the Great Hockey Stick scam. There’s ample evidence.
Greens don’t really care about the environment – they pretend to care because you care.
(Copied from some other luminary on here – sorry I can’t remember which one, but it’s a great line.)
BiS – The don’t give a flying f**k about your future
Yarp, they’ve led the people of the UK and Western Europe into a poverty trap where electricity, private accommodation and personal travel are turning into luxury goods and we’re borrowing money from our grandchildren to pay farmers to stop growing food.
I assume, when the food riots start, greenies will find their skulls are recycled by the circular economy into footballs.
“Greenies will find their skulls are recycled”
That’s when we’ll see positive proof of the old moto: “Greens are better known as Watermelons – green on the outside, red on the inside”
The stupidly expensive part of CC&S is extracting the CO₂ from the combustion exhaust, which is mainly N₂. Allam Cycle plants avoid that problem by having a turbine exhaust consisting almost exclusively of CO₂ and H₂O, which are relativey easy to separate. They also avoid producing oxides of nitrogen, which are actually quite nasty. The excess CO₂ can be bled off and either sequestered or, as I suspect will increasingly be the case in the future, be used as feedstock for all sorts of industrial processes.

The 40,000 additional wind turbines we’d need to replace gas-fired electricity.
You could have a million of the sodding things and they’d still do fuck-all to replace gas-fired if the wind wasn’t blowing or blowing too much!!
“ Around 201 ”
Grrr, just got back and seen that: *2010*
@ Steve 8.36
WHAT are you talking about?
Ten billion wind turbines would not be enough to provide a reliable source of energy to replace fossil fuels.
@TomJ
Allam Cycle That uses pure O² as an oxydiser. Any idea how much energy would be required to separate oxygen from atmospheric nitrogen? Liquifaction process? Doesn’t sound practical to me.
Given that most visitors to this page are sceptics, I wonder how many of us will put a penny in the tip jar of someone who unshakably believes in the face of all evidence to the contrary that carbon dioxide is society’s biggest long term problem. Why not go full on alarmist because there is quite a lot of money in that.
